Read moreGreat location, expected high prices but, for salad with bacon bits, poached egg, crumbled blue cheese and bacon dressing, you have maybe four forks fulls at most for $17 dollars and there was hardly any bacon bits, very light dish...like it didn't exist light! Read menu online, wasn't clear that there was a seperate menu from dinner and brunch from the hours of 4:00pm to 5:00pm, the menu seems so limted...convenient that i made 4:00pm reservation...i almost walked out, and suggested to my partner that we leave, didn't want to embaress ourselves so we stayed. At about 4:20, couple comes in, the know the real deal and how to order from that menu off hours, the woman even said to her waiter..."i know its not dinner until 5:00pm just want to look"...well...her husband ordered the french onion soup from the short hour menu and then placed her other order from the dinner menu. Not for nothing, this was an important date for myself and i came here cause of the reviews on the main menu items. Well by 4:45pm, this couple was receiving food from the main menu and it sucked cause it was in our face... We had asked if there were no other items to order and the experience was certainly biased. $170 later, you would expect to enjoy your experience after spending that kind of money for lunch/ dinner....instead feel place is a little biased and shouldn't subject there patrons to a seperate menu unless all customers are forced to order from one not another. Wasted money, had such limited choices had to opt for a couple of fork fulls of...
Read moreEDIT 3/7/2024: My father received a genuine heartfelt note from the owner apologizing for how we were treated by management/staff. She righted the wrongdoing we received. We consider this matter to be closed.
I gave an extra star for service because our waitress was pleasant. My father is not well with pancreatic cancer and on a pretty restrictive diet. My mother wanted to come to this iconic legendary cafe as a final hurrah for their NY stay. This was his first outing three weeks post op. One of the few items he can easily have is a Grilled Cheese on white or sourdough bread. The GC offered at the cafe comes on RYE sourdough. We asked our waitress if they were able to make the GC on plain sourdough as it's offered as a side on many other dishes on the cafe menu. Our waitress said she'd check with the "chef". The "chef" was unwilling to accommodate a bread change. I understand the cafe is busy - but it's literally a Grilled Cheese. We told our waitress in advance that my father had just had major surgery and was on a certain diet. The manger came over and sent berries which my father can not have. We got the bill and the manager came again and said he took care of the drinks -- that was a pot of tea. While I appreciate the minimal effort this person took, the humanity of it all was missing. I had some harsh words for management upon leaving and the response was "I can appreciate what you're saying." The bottom line here is - you never know what people are going through. I wouldn't recommend this...
