Not usually one to write reviews but think this one is worth noting. I tend to stop by Chez Alex at least a couple days a week, sometimes everyday. Highly recommend the breakfast bowl!! In terms of hot drinks, there is a lot left to be desired. They are sticklers for matcha measurements in the matcha latte - even if the matcha amount is disproportionate to the milk amount, so you're essentially drinking foamed milk. This goes without saying; I have tried many matcha lattes at many different spots all over NY and beyond, as it is part of my daily routine. Chez Alex had a good run for 2 weeks, with a friendly barista mentioning that they were using stronger matcha powder. Until this morning, when I'm assuming the dude who owns the cafe, made me his signature weak pastel green milky latte, to which I asked if they had gone back to their weaker matcha powder. One of the other baristas agreed with me and told me to stir which I did. The owner overheard and said maybe the powder was inconsistently measured by someone else. I politely then asked if it would be ok to put some extra matcha powder in the latte so it was as strong as I had had it the day prior. He then said that he would have to charge me double because they measure (or ration) it out exactly. So I unfortunately had to return said matcha and went somewhere else where the staff are way more familiar with matcha measurements. Again, don't normally do this, but I do think if you are charging $6-$7 plus tip (which I always add), it would be appreciated if you were more accommodating to your loyal neighborhood regulars. Very...
Read moreThe customer service is not good here. I ordered a “Breakfast Rice” and they gave me a “Breakfast Bowl.” When I told them they got my order wrong they told me I had to re-order and pay AGAIN for the “Breakfast Rice.” They wouldn’t even consider the possibility that they may have heard the order wrong.
I didn’t receive what I ordered and they were rude about it. First off, I’m a regular and the meal I wanted is the only thing I get on their breakfast menu, so I know it well. When I placed my order, the barista seemed confused about the protein I wanted. I didn’t make any substitutions on the meal either (they don’t allow that). I also remember thinking the meal was higher than I normally pay. I brushed it off anyway. I was thinking maybe they increased the prices, but it was because it wasn’t the right meal. I didn’t realize it until I received the meal. When I confronted them about it, I was told to order and pay for the meal I wanted. I paid for it, because I didn’t have the time to argue. People were also waiting to order their food.
In food service, it is so easy to mess up an order. It happens all the time, in so many ways. I was sure of what I order, but the barista told me she heard something else. Exactly! YOU heard something else, because “Breakfast Bowl” and “Breakfast Rice” sound so similar with all the noise in the background. The chances that you heard incorrectly is very likely and there was no accountability. Her tone and attitude is so bad for customer service. I was so excited about this cafe but I’m finding it difficult to...
Read moreI so bady wanted to give this bakery a 5 star rating. Really. After hearing so much about the Chez Alex Vegan Chocolate Cake and actually trying it at a local Bed-Stuy Restaurant I made it my mission to come try the actual store for myself.
Yes walking in the staff greeted me with a warm good morning and all went downhill from there.
My friend and I were waiting to order, we were second in line so of course naturally we'd be next. The employee asked us what we want and then without confirming or asking for payment just totally skipped us and served the person behind us. I found that so rude, I wanted to walk out right then but I really needed that cake fix!
So I ask him for a few slices as we wanted to bring some back to the office and his response, "no, we need to save some for the regulars" nevermind the fact that the friend I was with IS A REGULAR who lives right across the street.
It was a super disappointing episode. But the cake! Yes you must get the chocolate cake so you know what true...
