Even though I only went to Dun Huang to pickup food, I had a much more fulfilling experience than just that!
I came to Dun Huang for an early dinner and ordered takeaway when I arrived. The server who helped me, his name is William, was the kindest and friendliest server I've EVER encountered. He went through the menu with me, recommending me various items, and even let me add as much spice as I wanted to to my dishes when I asked (even though the fried noodles weren't meant to be spicy). We chatted the whole time while I waited for my food. He was such a warm person and showed a genuine interest in connecting with restaurant guests! Even without having tried the food yet, I knew that I would come back, as well as introduce this restaurant to my friends, just because of the amazing service and kindness that William showed!
In terms of the food, I was blown away! The prices were immensely cheap for NYC, and for HOW GOOD the dishes were!
Fried noodle with lamb ($13) - Super springy, chewy, soft noodles (think al dente). You could tell these were home made by the texture and taste! The serving was quite large (I could split it into another meal) and there were plenty of vegetables and lamb. The lamb was tender, fatty, and not too gamey, while the vegetables retained their crunch. SO GOOD!!
Mouthwatering chicken ($9) - This was a HUGE portion for an appetizer... Could be a full meal if you had some rice on the side! The chicken was tender and perfectly salted. The skin was slippery (in a good way, if you know what I mean) and the cilantro and peanuts on top were super fresh! The sauce was spicy, garlicky, and gingery. So good and EXACTLY what I was expecting and hoping to taste!
Eggplant salad ($8) - One of my favorite Chinese vegetarian dishes. The dish used actual Chinese eggplant, which already is a huge plus. The eggplant itself is more soft and palatable than American eggplants. The sauce was super garlicky (YUM!!) but still very balanced. In fact, the vinegar, soy sauce, and sugar in the sauce were so harmonious that you had to really look for the different flavors to notice each distinctly.
All in all, I LOVED Dun Huang's food and service (even though I just went for takeaway)! I can't wait to come back to properly dine-in! Thank you so much again William for being the best...
Read moreThis is the perfect place to go to on those cold, wet dreary days when you want some comforting no frills authentic Chinese food. A couple of co-workers and I decided to come here for an early dinner last week. Like most Chinese restaurants, the food came out super-fast. We ordered:
Chinese Hamburger with beef—thick cut marinated beef stuffed in a pita-like bread. This was just okay. I think I probably should have gotten the lamb instead. The beef was tender, but the burger could have fared better with some kind of sauce or gravy
Zha Jiang Noodles—loved the thin, soft, chewy noodles coated with the ground pork stew. The sliced cucumbers were a nice texture contrast and gave the dish a nice fresh element. This came in a large bowl, and we all thought it would be good to share between us three but actually we probably should have ordered another noodle dish. We devoured this one pretty quickly
Sweet and Sour Short Ribs—Bite sized short ribs tips. This was a pretty good dish. The meat was crunchy and sweet from the sauce and went perfectly with rice
Hot Chicken Wings—was delicious. It had a really crispy coating and very juicy meat. It wasn’t all that spicy, just a slight heat. A great appetizer; next time I would probably order two of these
Oxtail stew—this dish was part of their daily special and it was our favorite dish of the night. It was a very generous portion of oxtail stew with potatoes and corn. The oxtail was so tender and delicious, and the sauce perfectly enhanced the meat.
When we went, the restaurant wasn’t too crowded, and the staff were so nice. We were so comfortable and had a great time dining here. I really appreciated that they didn’t rush us out even though we stayed almost three hours! I saw online that they have several locations in Manhattan and Queens. Will have to try the one on the UWS...
Read moreI wouldn’t recommend to go to this restaurant for eating, I don’t like the service of there. I went there for twice, in the second time, I feel like I am not in a restaurant because the waitress that I saw when I was dining. My friend was finished her food, I saw a waitress came nearby and look at our table, and I am still eating my food. Then I saw her go back to the reception and talk with the other waitress, while she was talking, she was looking at us, then the other waitress was touching on a machine, it seems like she printed our bill. When I putted down my chopsticks, I saw the waitress with yellow hair came and ask to clean the table! She came just after I putted down my chopsticks, I didn’t rest for 5 minutes after eat. The yellow hair waitress just clean the stuff and take away, the next second, another waitress gave us the bill!!! The meaning of that is like they don’t want you to sit here more than 3 minutes after you finish your food, and want you to get out of their restaurant. After the bill on the table, I didn’t take out the money and give, then the waitress came and ask, “are you going to pay with card or cash?” The restaurant didn’t have that much consumers eating there, THE RESTAURANT IS NOT FULL IN THE TIME!
I just want to say, DO NOT COME HERE!!! DO NOT GIVE TIPS, THEY DONT DESERVE...
