The first time I had falafel at this place, in a pita sandwich, I found it disappointingly average. The best way to enjoy falafel is to have one just made, so it’s warm and crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. But if you let it sit for a while and cool off, then it hardens and becomes drier as it loses its moisture. That’s how the falafel was the first time. And unfortunately, that’s how it was the second time as well, and I would think that since a place has “falafel“ in its name that they would take pride and make falafel fresh to order. The second time I was there I ordered a falafel combo plate that came with a salad, which consisted of iceberg lettuce and a few chunks of tomato, and baba ghanoush and hummus, which were ok. But even though I ordered it to stay (as they have a nice outdoor seating area as well as a counter inside) they wastefully give you everything to go, regardless of your order, with a bag and plastic cover over the disposable food container. Also, everything was crammed in to the container and overlapping, so it was just like one big slop of food. I understand if it has to be that way for a to go order, but for someone who’s dining in, I think they could make a little effort to serve it on a plate and tray without creating all that unnecessary garbage. Lastly, the system for ordering is confusing. You walk in and there’s a bunch of people standing around and there are some terminals where you can place your order, but I learned you can also place your order at the register when I saw people come in after me go and do that. But there’s no direction or order and it’s up to you to figure it out. That’s just another example of lack of care for the experience of the customer. After two tries, I’m done with this place because you can get better, and freshly made,...
Read moreFamiliar with Mamouns Falalafel and it's first NYC location in the McDougal St West Village location. We go there when we are in the area though since it's a bit of a commute, it's not that often. So it was good to hear that they now had an Upper West Side location (though opened in April, seems the local press just mentioned it recently). Got to the restaurant just after it opened so finally got to see what it's like when it's not crowded. It's got a nicely situated location on Columbus where there are a lot of places to eat and stuff to do. It's also good to know that restaurants are expanding their presence in the UWS as the pandemic has affected the area(as seen with many retail vacancies) For our take out order, I got the sandwiches of shawarma and chicken kebob, the signature sandwiches of macdougal, bleeker, west 4th and sullivan. The choices reflect either chicken or shawarma or a combination. Also got baklava for dessert. They added hot sauces (described as spicy sauce made from imported hot pepper spices) While I was waiting for the order to be prepared, they were nice to let me try a cup of their mamouns iced tea, described as freshly brewed, unsweetened black tea infused with cardamom. has a unique though delicious taste as cardamom has a complex aroma, fruity, possibly menthol flavor. So, how was the takeout? Pretty good actually, especially the Shawarma and Chicken Kebob sandwiches. The Sullivan was just OK though probably was full already so could have enjoyed it more. West 4th was amazing too. Can't wait to try the rest. My wife also liked the Chicken Kebob and baklava. It's definitely a place you should try and they even set up outdoor seating if you would...
Read moreI just eat at the UWS Maroons. I’ve been going to village one for 30 years. I want to start by saying I’ve never written a terrible review before this will be my first one. Also, I’d like to say that the actual falafel is really good, but in this case there was a woman I don’t know whether she was a manager or not who accosted me in the outdoor space and told me that I had taken the wrong falafel. She accused me of taking the wrong number she said that the right number was 92 and that I had taken 91 perhaps true and honest mistake. I was about three bites into the falafel at that point. She came over aggressively and said that’s the wrong falafel and you’re gonna have give it back and she handed me a new falafel And I said you’re going to throw out this falafel and she said yes and I said well I can give it to a homeless person and she said no you can’t have two falafels it’s our policy. Then I said please let me buy the falafel from you and then I’ll give it to a homeless person. she said absolutely not. She was a little bit out of control at that point I kept pressing her because I really felt uncomfortable about giving away a full sandwich to the garbage but that’s what she insisted on so she took the original sandwich and gave me the new one and ruined my dinner. Made me very upset because you know my stomach was in knots from having this argument over nothing and so I just wanted to report that the upper West side maroons even though I’m not gonna argue it’s an excellent falafel, but I would take it to go and stay away...
