Very forgettable food. I live next door and was excited to see this place progressing, but both my wife and I were disappointed. For starters, several of the fish are pureed, so there is no texture, or rather is but it’s mushy and super unappetizing. And you can bet they aren’t pureeing high-quality salmon, yellowtail, etc. I sat at the counter and literally watched as they squeezed puréed salmon out of some big plastic bag into a huge tub from which the served it into the rolls. It made my stomach turn!
The wasabi comes in little trays that were obviously prepared en masse earlier in the day because the top of the wasabi piles were darker and a bit crusty. And the wasabi portions were very small; I had to ask for extra wasabi 3 times. While the service was quick, it’s super annoying to be constantly in need of something so basic.
Across the 7 rolls we tried, we both agreed the taste and mushy texture was too same same. More bizarre is that they even look the same. Sitting near the service station, the staff were constantly debating which rolls were which in order to get them served to the correct table.
The music and vibe feels like a nightclub or something. It’s really not a comfy place to be in, and overall feels like the kind of place opened by an investor trying to be trendy.
The one highlight is there were so many staff swarming the place, and they were attentive and friendly. But they were also super inexperienced. The crew making the sushi rolls were apparently new to sushi.
In the end we left still a little hungry. We may try again in the future to test if they change the menu...

Avoid the specials, they aren't really worth it at all. Just go for the standard or signatures, but I'd recommend the cold options only as I personally think handrolls taste better that way. Combine it with any of the great tea options if it's a colder day.
I also recommend ordering 1 handroll at a time per person, that way you can pace yourself and take your time. I actually really like being able to do this, versus the other spots that have combo deals and you end up finishing your food too quickly.
We've been here twice already, I think it's calmed down after the initial opening so you can just walk in if it's a 2-4 person group. If you're a bigger group, probably best to call ahead since there's only 2 tables that seat 6 or more.
Overall I'm glad that this handroll option opened up in LIC, it's a good addition to the neighborhood. Service and atmosphere are great, it's a more elevated dining option that's currently dinner only, but I believe they may open for lunch in the future, according to the owner when we...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting Matsunori Handroll Bar LIC during their soft opening, and it did not disappoint! We tried a variety of handrolls, starting with the Yellowtail, which was fresh and full of flavor, and it had these crispy puffed rice pieces mixed in which gave it a delicious textural component. The Eel was perfectly smoky and tender, while the Snow Crab had a delicate sweetness that really stood out with the mango in it. The Spicy Scallop was a perfect balance of heat and creaminess, and the Wagyu with Uni on top? Absolutely decadent—rich, flavorful, and indulgent.
As if the handrolls weren’t enough, they treated us to a complimentary dessert: Green Tea Mochi and Crème Brûlée. The mochi was light and chewy with just the right hint of matcha flavor, and the crème brûlée had a perfect caramelized top and a silky smooth center.
Overall, the experience was fantastic—Matsunori Handroll Bar LIC definitely has a winning combination of fresh ingredients and innovative flavors. Highly recommend...
