My American friend and I visited Min Du Sheng Yan to celebrate Lunar New Year, but unfortunately, our experience was a letdown. As a group of two, we felt unwelcome and like we were treated differently compared to groups of all Asian people.
The service was subpar. Our tea was never filled or refilled, and when we asked for water, we were given a glass with residuals that the waiter claimed was "lemon water." The appetizers were also disappointing: the cucumber was overly spicy, the peanuts were too salty, and the seaweed tasted like paper.
The $30 Fuzhou Sweet & Sour Pork With Lychee was a major disappointment. We were expecting the signature dragon boat presentation, but instead, it came in a regular dish. When we asked why, the server Jiating told us it was because we ordered too few dishes. This felt money-oriented and tacky. The dish only have pork and potato. My American friend asked seriously where is the Lychee. None. My American friend said this is no better than the Chinese take out sweet and sour pork in Chen's kitchen. Not worthy that price at all.
My American friend wondered what is made of the lucky bag dish? Does it mean if you are lucky you get a piece meat inside, and if you are not lucky you get a piece bone inside? That's my American friend's assumption. We didn't take the chance since we had a bad luck with the sweet and sour pork dish. At the end we didn't get the fruit plate like the table next to us.
The only redeeming dish was the $100 crab rice, which was tasty. However, we were not invited to select seafood from the pool as advertised on the menu. All the vegetable dishes are twice as much as other places.
Overall, our experience was marred by poor service, subpar food, and a feeling of being unwelcome. Unless you're willing to spend a lot of money, I'd advise against visiting Min...
Read moreWhen I heard flushing opening an upscale restaurant for Fuzhou cuisine, I couldn’t wait to try it out. The service was great. I enjoyed chatting with the staff in hometown dialect. The Chinese razor clam (活蛏)was frozen not live and rather dry after they cooked it. Crab with fried sweet rice (红蟳糯米饭), the crab was fresh but somehow it wasn’t as tasty as I expected. This special fish imported from china called 黄梅丁 in Chinese ($108 per pound) has very unique look and taste, my friends enjoyed it very much. What we enjoyed most was Spicy Crispy Double Delight (爆炒双脆 )which is pan fried pig kidney with jelly fish, an indeed Fuzhou delicacy! They added fried dough (油条) to the dish which is different from the traditional way. We also love the free appetizer fried peanuts and soy sauce seasoned white radish (酱萝卜片)。Crispy Duck With Taro (香酥鸭)has small piece skinless duck meat wrapped inside taro. It’s crispy but mainly taro flavor. The meal for three people including tips was over $300. However we still feel it’s great place for parties. One thing I want to point out that the tipping calculation they show on the receipt is NOT accurate. It uses the total amount to calculate the tips which means you’re paying tips to the tax as well. I hope they can correct it on...
