Mr Pollo #1 — Restaurant in New York

This review will be a brutally honest review about this place. Now my gf and I were not planning on going here to eat but the place we were trying to go had no more tables so we walked to this place because we were looking for some good chicken to eat. Now it is a spanish restaurant more than a chicken place even though its name is Pollo. The atmosphere is confusing cause you don’t know if they’re trying to be a club or legitimately a restaurant as the music is extremely loud. My partner ordered the calamari and I order the chicken wings as appetizers. The calamari was 100% not real calamari. We could easily tell that it wasn’t real it was merely a substitute calamari and it was very fishy in the taste and the texture was off. The wings I order from the place literally called “Mr Pollo #1” the wings served was from the freezer also could very easily tell. (My partner and I are very much foodies). For entrees my partner had the Bandeja Paisa and I ordered a skirt steak. Now this is where I was really disappointed the steak that I received was in fact not a real skirt steak at all. This is one of these places that will use other cuts of beef such as chuck roast and sell it off as real steak item. The plate that they cook the steak on smelled so bad that the scent of it goes into the steak and also it needed to be cleaner. I barely even touched the steak and the guy who noticed asked if everything was okay and I told him this steak was very off and he offered me a bigger sized steak and he called it a sirloin steak which is the only reason I gave two stars because that was very accommodating. I received the second steak and it was still weird smelling and at that point I could 1000% agree that it was in fact chuck steak meat. The bandeja paisa that my partner ordered was very off as well. Not a good place for an evening out they need to change a lot if they want to even compare to all the other places in this area. Was very let down & almost didnt want to pay at the end but we are nice people. Just be wary of these things when trying to go here. I went last Monday for the first time , it was great! I had a really nice waiter that took great care of myself, my daughter and my mother. Check was 120 ( no gratuity included) i paid with cash and tipped him very well because I’m a server as well in the industry for 20+ years , well I went again this Monday ( yesterday ) just myself and my best friend. The check was 42 dollars plus a service charge of 18% !!!! I felt ABSOLUTELY INSULTED that the waitress added a tip to my 42 dollar check ( a party of 2 )!!!!! That was 100% discrimination and 100% illegal!!!!And also adding gratuity to any tables check a manager has to OK that or owner, especially for a smaller party!!!! In restaurants, you are allowed to add gratuity to parties of six or more But it also has to be posted on the menu!! The fact that she added a 7 dollar tip FOR HER on my check ( especially when I was going to tip her 20 dollars ) because like i said IM A WAITRESS MYSELF !!!!!! I am ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED, INSULTED AND NEVER GOING BACK THERE!!!! As I was handing her the check with 50 dollars in it ( the check was 49.48 with the grat included), I told her that I was there exactly a week ago with a higher check three people, and the gratuity was not included, and I also told her how I felt insulted that she added a gratuity to my check and I let her know it is not legal to do that in a restaurant and she replied she’s very sorry THEN STARTED SPEAKING SPANISH FAST LIKE SHE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH !! Luckily my best friend speaks Spanish and he translated that she said a party of three yes, they can put gratuity on the check but not a party at two and I said I’m a party of two ( she also put party of one on the check) and last time there was no gratuity for a party of 3!!! I said so why did you put gratuity on it? She didn’t know what to say, but then she said that the owner that took care of me last week , that he was my server ?? I told her I’m never coming back and that she lost money by doing that because I would’ve tipped her half the check. This place is a good size has a few tables available for sit down service. My daughter and I sat in a booth and couldn't wait to start our visit. For drinks my daughter got a recommendation of a Specialty Barbie Mocktail it was pretty, pink and tasted good. I got a BlackBerry Mojito which was not made correctly so it was very sour. It was made with lemons and not limes so it was very, very sour. My last drink was a Frozen Passionfruit Margarita and it was very very good it was frozen I highly recommend the frozen drinks. For Appetizer I got the Fried Chicken Wings & Fries which my daughter enjoyed the wings looked crispy. I also ordered Stuffed Green Plantain Cups Shrimp the shrimps were cold and made in a creamy sauce it was good but am not used to it being cold. I also got the Beef stuffed green plantains which my daughter did enjoy. For our Main dish we got the Fried snapper w. Yellow rice & sweet plantain it was presented well and had good flavor. The PARRILLADA MR. POLLO was the star dish the presentation is 10/10 everyone will be looking for sure. The dish includes steak, chicken & shrimp and two sides of your choice I got the Yuka fries, a salad and rice with mine.
