I’ve been to a number of Red Ribbon Bakeshops, ranging from those in the Philippines, to places like Virginia and California. The one in Woodside I’ve visited three times.
The first time, I came for their mango supreme cake and they were out of both slice and roll varieties. The second time, I came to redeem a survey offer for a free butter mamon, and the employee at the register—instead of making the butter mamon in my basket free, charged me for it and then gave me an extra “free” butter mamon?? I was too tired to argue.
The third and most recent time, I wanted to get a few pastries to greet my mom with at JFK airport the next day, on her way back to the Philippines. I purchased a small slice of mango supreme cake (which was in stock!) and a “small” sans rival cake (which was 8 inches). I asked politely if I could get (or even buy) -one- extra plastic container (like the ones they use for the individual cake slices) so that I could cut off some slices of the 8-inch “small” sans rival cake to give to my mom for her trip. Their answer was a “no” and then a “Following guest, please” to when I asked, politely in confusion, “Why?”
Maybe I am spoiled by American bakeries, who practically give plastic utensils and containers for free if you ask kindly. Or Chinese or Latino bakeries that will charge a small fee but definitely have them available to customers. I just don’t understand Red Ribbon’s inflexibility when there are stacks of plastic containers right behind the counter. Maybe it’s some sort of rigid company policy, but I still don’t understand their disregard to my question. The dismissal of the last part—that’s what disappointed me. It seems like once you pay, you are no longer treated as a guest and encouraged to leave in order to make room for the next “guest” with a wallet.
In summary: Their refrigerated, packaged pastries (not made on the premises but shipped from a central location) are not bad. In fact, I really like their mango rolls and ube rolls. Their cheesy ensaymada, taisan loaf, Brazo de Mercedes, and choco mocha crunch cakes are great. I do recommend checking the expiration date on the side of your box if you do buy a cake—the closer the date, the drier the cake.
However, I’ve been so frustrated with at least Woodside’s Red Ribbon Bakeshop’s service on each subsequent visit that I will not visit anymore. There are just as many places in Woodside where you can find delicious Filipino pastries and more consistent,...
Read moreCan't believe I haven't reviewed Red Ribbon, this is after all one of our stops whenever we go to Woodside Queens (coming all the way from Manhattan) for our Filipino food fix. So grateful they're around and certainly satisfies all the cravings.
Drove yesterday to get 2 birthday cakes for the hubby. First and foremost, I called thinking I need to place an order and will just pick it up. Apparently they're already open and Lito, who I spoke to on the phone, even encouraged me to look for him to assist me. I never got to ask for him because there were only 4 customers allowed inside and it went by pretty quick!
Love how it feels extra clean and safe inside. You can no longer personally touch the baked products, you'll just order it and they'll pack it for you so less risk of exposure to anything potentially transmitted. Provides peace of mind.
As for the order itself, my husband requested for his favorite Yema Cake and I added my favorite Chocolate Mousse cake. So so so GOOD! As always, they were a hit to our non-Filipino guests and family members (they always end up asking where to buy and me being the ambassador and endorser of the brand) and to my hubby who's been won over by Filipino food and taste. ♥️
Our other must-buys and favorites here are mamon (sponge cake like), Choco Moist, Ube Cheese Ensaymada, and of course the Ube Cake. Any Ube lover would absolutely be obsessed by this cake, trust me! :) They also have savory food and we absolutely love their Chicken Empanada and Arroz Caldo. They're also very famous for their Palabok and Halo Halo (when we were first dating, I brought my husband here and he absolutely loved it) and have quite the customer following for these and more.
My absolute highest recommendation! Thank you Red Ribbon for being here! Manhattan branch...
Read moreI love this place! All cakes and the chicken empanadas are my favorite and It is just a couple block from my house but Im giving a 2 stars because of the service. I was in the line waiting, and when it was my turn at the counter trying to order something … There were three of them at the registers which no customer. One girl was packing that I understand she’s busy so I moved to another register with the guy standing there I said hello and didn’t get response, I continued waiting maybe they are busy or didn’t hear then I said hello again to make sure they know Im here and ready to order and still didn’t hear any response and Im sure they heard me. They obviously ignored and continued on their conversation and not even give me an eye contact. I still waiting util I think this is very rude and poor service so I left. By walking out of the door I looked back and saw them watching me walking out, once the door closed and I looked back to them I saw and heard they are laughing right away and obvious about me. I am also working in food and beverage industry and I think this is unacceptable service. If you don’t respect your customers you guys should not work in any type of a service job. I really feel bad for the company or the owners.
By the way I love food and...
