Route 66 Cafe — Restaurant in New York

Very wonderful place to have breakfast lunch or dinner and very affordable prices. Serves was speedy and welcoming, great experience. We found this cafe by mistake and we were all amazed at how delicious the food was for lunch so we decided to return with my sister and her friend for dinner.

Upon our arrival, we were seated quickly and our server greeted us with pleasant smile and proceeded to take our orders. Since it was my last night in NYC I wanted my last meal to be extraordinary appetizing so I ordered the 16oz steak(medium rear) with mash and asparagus, my sister had steak also (medium well) and both my kid's had burgers. Our friend returned from the washroom and ask for some time to look over the menu but was told she all the orders needed to go in at once, that's correct but our server could have walked away for 5min but she wasn't given the chance to flip through the menu and ordered chicken.

Our starters came and it was all delicious! Out came our mains and it all looked perfect and smelled great! I started on my steak and took a few bits and realized it was medium well, which I can't eat. So I call over the waitress and told her it was overcooked and the look she gave me was not appreciated but I didn't let that bother me. She said I asked for medium well and I said "no", she said "do you need me to bring a light over for you to check?". "Ummm, no thanks. I can't eat this". She took it away while shouting towards the kitchen that I don't want the meal as it's overcooked and I ordered it that way😒. To my surprise a guy walked up to our table and started the conversation by saying the meat was medium well and I was wrong because I don't know what I was speaking about, but they will redo my order! I let him know I am well informed as my partner is a chef and this is not my first rodeo so he is wrong. And I also let him know the meat was done medium as he stated earlier but I ordered medium rear. They left and shortly thereafter my meal arrived charred and once again it was overcooked, I eat some but left a good portion on the plate because I could not eat the meatas it was too well done.

We ordered the pumpkin cheese cake which was heavenly and absolutely mouthwatering. We sat waiting for the bill which didn't appear as our server was eating a slice herself at the table next to ours. So we waited some more, maybe 15 minutes but she didn't approach us at all. So my friend asked, then my sister and my daughter but she didn't come to the table. Another server cane and we paid our Bill, we still left 10% tip as we all agreed her behavior shouldn't depict her colleagues and the restaurant.

We enjoyed the food and service at lunch but dinner was lacking mostly in service. I will definitely revisit as I believe in...

Bare minimum expectations of arriving with a reservation to a food establishment should include being greeted by a host, being seated with a menu, and receiving the food that you ordered. Unfortunately Route 66 missed the mark on all three. After being seated by a server 10 minutes after arriving and sitting with no menu for another 15, I probably should have cut my losses and left, but I was hungry and stuck it out. Despite it not being that busy at all the whole place felt wildly disorganized. Praise must be given for the food as it was quite tasty and was the only thing that prevented a 1 star experience . It was also the complete wrong order, but at that point I didnt care. If you are in New york City and find yourself considering Route 66, I recommend considering a taco...

Was a very nice night and great place to eat at the outdoor tables in front and enjoy the street theater. This is a place where you should keep it simple and stick with the passable sandwiches and burgers - all decent choices.

I was hungry for chicken parmigiana though and learned that it is NOT the right thing to order here. The cheese was not parmesan and instead something very white and tasteless (mozzarella maybe?). Both the underlying red sauce pasta and previously frozen breaded chicken patty just wreaked of garlic - so strongly that I could finish neither one...and about 1/2 the way through I just gave up.

Once again enjoyed the outdoor table -and my dinner companion- at Route 66, and if I try this restaurant again it won't be for the Chicken...
