I was totally impressed by the luxurious line-up of premium meats and seafood. From A5 wagyu to miyazaki wagyu, and abalone to scallops, all the ingredients are fresh and top graded.
While there are so many hot pot spots in NYC, I found Shoo Loong Kan is not like the other chains. The restaurant is exceptionally clean, bright and modern. Their service is 100% attentive and caring. There is a storage space under your chair to keep the hot pot smell out of your belongings and coats (so thankful for this design). Aprons are also provided.
Conveniently located only 5 minutes away from Union Square, Shoo Loong Kan brings authentic Szechuan flavors to the city.
Our favorites: *A5 Wagyu Beef Shoulder A5和牛嫩肩** The A5 wagyu beef has beautiful marbling and was decently cut into thin slices. It literally melted in my mouth with a burst of rich buttery flavor.
*Handmade Beef Ball 手工牛肉丸* Their beef balls were surprisingly my favorite. Unlike the typical store bought ones, they tasted fresh, bouncy and meaty.
*Fresh Scallops 冰鮮貝柱** Scallops were fresh with a hint of lemon-y flavor. It was super smooth and tender after cooked.
*Shrimp Paste 手打蝦滑* Their housemade shrimp paste with fish roe was a fantastic addition to the hot pot. An elevated version of premade smashed shrimp balls.
*Chinese Black Sesame Donut w. Mochi* These Chinese donuts are basically deep fried donuts filled with mochi and sprinkled with black sesame. Be sure to enjoy them when they are still warm—the fried dough is soft while the mochi is stretchy. 10/10 dessert!!
Broth: *House Special Chili Broth 招牌紅鍋 SUPER SPICY. Don’t order unless you’re very confident of your spice tolerance…
*Tomato Broth 蕃茄鍋* Very rich and thick tomato soup. Actual tomatoes were added to the broth.
*Pork Rib Broth 排骨鍋* Highly recommend this broth for non-spice eaters. It is so flavorful and matches any ingredients. We even found a giant piece of pork rib...
Read moreI think this location in Manhattan opened relatively recently :0 There's usually a pretty long queue at the branch in Flushing, so I was relieved when my friend and I were quoted ~5-10 minute wait time when we got there around 6:30 on a weekday.
For the soup base broth you can choose a pot with 1/2/3 "options" (e.g. different broths), and it was very funny to us that the 1-broth pot costs more than the 2-broth option but less than the 3-broth one?? maybe someone can explain what the pricing logic is here haha
We opted for the two-broth pot with pork rib and tomato, and they were both sooo good! Honestly the pork rib broth was one of the highlights of the meal; it was so fragrant and not too salty that we drank a lot of it at the end of our meal. Delicious
Despite being one of the cheaper options, the "premium beef slices" (精品肥牛) were our favourite meat option. Other than that, we loved the sweet potato noodles (ended up getting a few orders of this after scarfing them down super quickly). Veggies were fresh and tasty across the board.
I also really liked the ice cream at the end of the meal hehe, and the sauce bar w some sweet desserts was also a nice touch to round everything out. Even though we were both quite full, dessert goes into a separate stomach so we still enjoyed some jelly on top of the ice cream.
Overall price point was solid! Definitely not cheap, but I think the quality and quantity of the food make the cost worthwhile, and I think had we come with even more people it would have been even more reasonable (IMO hot pot gets much more efficient with larger groups of people).
I'd definitely come again (if just for the delicious...
Read moreShoo Loong Kan is an authentic chinese hotpot place! There are so many hotpot ingredients to choose from. I really appreciated how attentive the waiters/waitresses were to us!
What we got: 🥘Pork broth/less spicy hot chilli broth: Pork broth was pretty standard. It had a large bone of pork in the broth to add flavor. THE SPICY BROTH IS SPICY. I do not have a spice tolerance at all, but my friends that do like spice said the less spicy was spicy 😭 🥩Premium beef slices: Very awesome! good quality and very easy to chew. 🥩Wagyu shoulder: You could see the nice marbling on the meat, and it was rather tender. I love wagyu 🥩Diced wagyu: I think I liked the shoulder better just because there was more meat in one bite. Still very tasty! 🥚Quail Eggs: I LOVE QUAIL EGGS. THESE WERE GOOD. 🥬Vegetable Platter: It came with enoki mushroom, spinach, and other assortment of greens. Very enjoyable and is refreshing to eat while eating a lot of meat! 🐠Fish Roe Ball: GET THESE. I love fish roe balls in hotpot so much. Super flavorful. 🐟Scallops: The plating was so beautiful!!! I really like scallops as well, and these were great!
I really liked how this hotpot place had nice plating. A lot of restaurants often skip out on the plating since you put all the ingredients to cook it anyways. But it was very aesthetic...
