So you think you know a thing or two about breakfast? Well, I'm here today to tell you that until you've eaten at Smile To Go you're nothing more than a baby sucking on their thumb. If you want to experience life changing flavor and service then you need to come to this establishment and allow your taste buds to be massaged by the masters behind the kitchen.
You think I'm joking? You think I'm writing up nothing but fantastical nonsense? Well that ain't me, I worked with the military for twenty years and I'm dead serious when I say that this place saved my soul from the clutches of my boundless depression. I've finally started painting again, I stopped after I lost my family in a terrible fire tornado back in 1983. My son Jeremy got sucked up by that flaming vortex and I didn't even have a chance to get him his birthday cake.
I thought I might never recover, but one taste of their perfectly crispy bacon made me realize that there was more to life than post traumatic stress disorder. Life is a tapestry and we all weave many threads as we travel through it - whatever threads this place is made of I cannot be certain. But when I look at the fabric of my long and fading life, I realize that Smile To Go is nothing short of heavenly silk - milked from the finest of angels and woven into an image that would blind a sinner if they ever dared gaze upon it.
There's just something special about sipping on my coffee while watching pigeons fight over my bagel scraps in the park. It makes me feel like an ancient Roman emperor with a lust for power and a hunger for war. The Pigeon God they would call me, and I would rule over them with an iron bird shaped fist. What does any of this mean? Even I'm not sure, I just knew that I had to write this review and properly honor the place which changed my life and kept me from throwing myself into the mouth of a volcano. God bless the troops and God bless...
Read moreI don’t usually visit this place often to get my coffee, and honestly, I find it unnecessary to write bad reviews or give people a hard time — especially lately. I truly hope my words won’t upset anyone. I visited yesterday, and the lady at the counter served me. It was partly my fault for not mentioning the coffee size right away, and I understand that our misunderstanding was simple and unintentional. This small encounter shouldn’t lead to a negative review, because this café doesn’t deserve to be judged based on one unpleasant moment. However, I’d like to make a small remark: Please, when someone comes in to order coffee, try to hand over the right cup size or simply show it from a distance. Students like me are often in a hurry to get to class each morning. If I seemed impolite, I sincerely apologize. Because indeed, it was my fault not mentioning the coffe size at the very beginning. Especially because my tone of voice was loud, I know it's not an excuse. Still, if I were in your position, I would never place a cup on the counter forcefully or say, “You’re the one who’s asking me.” Which's why I said carelessly, "I just want to pay and go," one last thing — to the gentleman in charge, (or reading this): please consider getting stoppers for the coffee cups. It would really help. And still the coffee, tasted actually really nice. And I wish you wonderful day. And please, I hope my comment won't upset or influence...
Read moreSmile To Go is a pricey eatery located in Gramercy. This is the sister restaurant to the one in SoHo which I used to frequent when I worked at The French Culinary Institute several times a week notably for their excellent chocolate chip cookies. I came here to have a bite of lunch. The sandwich had an unusual cheese and greens. Filling but not tasty. I also took a blueberry muffin which was studded with many berries and tasted wholesome. I took half home. There is plenty of seating and few customers. It's open early for breakfast. The restroom is on the second floor as it's part of the hotel. Before I left, I saw some four pastries lying on a plate. I asked Alia if they sold them half price as this place closes at 4 pm. She sold me what turned out to be a very tasty sticky bun...
