I have lived in NYC over 2 years and only just discovered this place! I wish I did sooner. If you want an amazing, cozy pub with British home comforts this should be your go to! Right from entering the place, it is very COVID safe. Taking temperatures, contact tracing, spaced out tables, masks, sanitizer. The dark haired young girl serving us sorry I forgot her name, she was lovely. So friendly, accommodating, welcoming. Decor is so lovely and christmassy, and music is great. We had 2 extra guests and no problem! The bathrooms are so cool, they play Winston Churchill speeches. Now onto the best part. Drinks choices are great! I got Strongbow cider and blackcurrant, prosecco and a jagerbomb - delicious and standard NYC prices. But my gosh the food, WOW. We started with scotch eggs and they were so tasty, the best scotch eggs we ever had. So fresh, hot and flavorsome. I then had fish and chips with mushy peas and beans. Wow, best fish and chips I've had in NYC! The chips don't taste like chip shop chips but they were lovely nonetheless. The fish was great and batter very nice! The beans were Heinz beans too, yum! Others in my party got burgers, beef and Guinness pot pie and curried chips - all were delicious. Oh and dessert - sticky toffee pudding with ice cream was lovely. The only improvements I could give: Less salt on the nacho chips that come with the spinach and artichoke dip. Less cheese on the stilton burger as it's strong cheese. Pastry of the pie could have been better, flakier etc.
BUT these are minor points and I am only giving this feedback because I will be coming here all the time :) !! I give this place 5 stars and I cannot wait to come back here to try the whole menu, and the...
Read moreI really want to like this place - I really do, but the service really ruined our experience. During the Christmas time, the decoration is BEAUTIFUL and I was in awe the entire time. However, our waitress was the worst I have ever experienced in my life. First of all, she was very judgey on what we were ordering. Even though we told the hostess we were only there for drinks, the waitress kept asking when we were going to order food. Since we were going to stay awhile for to ring in the new year (we were there NYE), we decided to get some food anyway. When we ordered, she was very condescending/judgey as well. We read straight off the menu and ordered their "chips". When we did, she went "Oh you mean fries?". Yes... but aren't we in a British PUB?! The waitress forgot half of our orders and never apologized when we asked several times (FYI, the bar was maybe a quarter full). We were not sure if the bar would give complimentary champagne at midnight (I've seen many bars do this) so we asked if we could order champagne. Not only did she make us order two bottles of champagne (kept telling us it was too small a bottle), she decided not to tell us that the bar was going to prepare complimentary glasses of champagne for everyone. So here we are, with two bottles of champagne (of which we only finished one), with extra glasses of champagne. We weren't the only ones who ended up buying bottles of champagne.
Atmosphere of the bar is great, especially during Christmas time. The bathrooms are whimsical (there is a speaker that plays recordings of Winston Churchill). Service...
Read moreThe Churchill Tavern, it's this little slice of England, right in the heart of the Flatiron district. It's the kind of place Churchill himself might've stumbled into after a long day, probably would've grumbled about the noise.
Now, the joint’s crammed with U.K. classics - the food, I mean. It's like the British invaded again, but this time with their kitchen. You've got your pies and your fish and chips, but twisted up, like they've seen a bit of the world outside the foggy isles.
The beer, hell, it flows like the Thames. Every kind of brew you could want, right there on draught, ready to drown your sorrows or lift your spirits, whatever you're after.
And here's a thing - old Winston, he had a soft spot for flicks. Loved 'That Hamilton Woman', watched it over and over. Probably saw a bit of himself in it, battling against the odds. He had his quirks too, like any of us. Liked to paint, they say. Might've even been happier with a brush than a cigar.
But back to the tavern. Come the holidays, it's like a Dickens novel come to life. All decked out, sparkling lights and tinsel. It's got a warmth to it, makes you forget you're in the concrete jungle and not some old London street.
The Churchill Tavern, it's more than just a pub. It's a reminder of a different time, a different place. Maybe a bit of a refuge for those of us who've seen too much, or maybe not enough. It's a spot where you can sit back, raise a glass to old Winston, and let the world spin on without you...
