The biscuit is the star of the show (and the plantains are deliciously sweet.) the pulled oats are a little weird.
we got the chicken biscuit, the philly cheesesteak, the plantains and black eyed peas (as well as a chocolate macadamia nut cookie)
i absolutely loved the chicken biscuit. the biscuit was perfection, and there's just some key memory that gets unlocked with hot lettuce on a sandwich. lulz. (my husband's opinions about the chicken biscuit, the biscuit was the star of the show. the chicken's flavor didn't stand out, but he liked the texture. and the slaw gave it a nice taste)
the pulled oats in the cheesesteak isn't really my thing, but my husband liked it. (i could clearly taste the oat flavor. i would try it again, but it would need to be slathered in BBQ sauce or something instead of simple like in the cheesesteak. it crisped up nicely, but didn't remind me of cheesesteak. the texture was much more fibrous than i would expect of a cheesesteak.) my husband really liked how the bread was soft on the outside and crispy on the inside. he liked the texture of the pulled oats., and the flavor of the cheese and ketchup mixed together. (i could take it or leave it)
the plantains were lovely. (the darker crispy ones were like candy)
the black eyed peas were basic but very flavorful. (maybe slightly too salty?)
the cookie was good! by the name on the menu, "chocolate macadamia nut cookie" i was expecting it to be a cocoa cookie with macadamias, but it was a chocolate chip cookie with macadamias in it. it was a tender type of cookie. mine had very few macadamias, but my husband's had a lot. he really liked how the combo of macadamia and chocolate chips played off...

Read moreI don’t know how often I’ve rode past this place and never knew it was there. Not to long ago I had a conversation with a resident of Newark who said that their really isn’t any true or factual vegan restaurants in Newark, just some that offer vegan or vegetarian options. I was in Newark on business and a friend said let’s do lunch while I was there. She found Urban Vegan on google maps. The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in is the smell of green vegetables. A very clean healthy fragrance you’ll never get in a restaurant that cooks meat. Being a close observer I noticed in the rear of the place a food prep area that was very clean. Your meal and beverages are prepared behind the register and it was very clean also, and they were busy at the time. If you dine in they bring your food to your table. My friend who is known to throw back some chicken or a burger was totally surprised that vegan food was so delicious. She was outdone. I had the black eyed pea burger and all the trimmings were fresh, cool and crunchy. They offer a smoothie named Forever Young that I didn’t taste until we were back in the car. I would’ve purchase a liter of that delicious beverage if I had tasted it in the restaurant. It’s my official vegan joint when I’m in Newark. Even if I just grab a Forever young smoothie. Oh, I almost forgot, the bathroom was very clean, almost sterile. #vegan #googlemaps #newarknj #sankofatafari #kingofcoffeenyc...
