Cozy little coffee house and café located on the Bayfront with a full bar, a small but decent selection of draft beers and an excellent wine flight. Perfectly oriented to have a warm meal and a drink while you watch the fishing fleet come in and out. Limited indoor and outdoor seating; I have a feeling this place fills up quick. The indoor seating is sectioned off by clear vinyl sheeting to provide for a little better separation from the other guests. Parking is ample although this is the Bayfront and you might have a bit of a walk.t
I had the bowl of chowder and a side salad with a Deschutes Black Butte Porter, and my wife had the fish and chips and a small cup of chowder with a soda.
The chowder is truly excellent. I'm honestly a little lost for words. I do not believe I'm overstating it when I say this chowder would be worth at least a three- or four- hour drive. Not a huge portion with the 'large bowl' but that just left me wanting more and it's probably the perfect portion for most. I will say that I'd definitely rather have a small bowl of The Coffee House chowder than a huge bowl of Mo's! Less potatoes than some and brimming with really good, really fresh, local clam meat. No sand whatsoever and perfectly cooked, not overly chewy. Perfectly seasoned and made sinfully unctuous with a pat of butter and oyster crackers if you desire. May just be the best in Newport. We plan on coming back for multiple taste tests just to be sure!
Fish in the fish and chips was good, fresh local cod with a skillfully fried batter (not greasy at all), although it was a little under- seasoned. The tartar sauce was house-made and truly excellent, however. If you don't like tartar sauce you might find the fish a little bland. Fries were amazing, seasoned perfectly. Definitely twice-fried so they are beautifully soft on the inside and crisp on the outside without being greasy.
The salad was wonderful as well. Fresh ingredients including a nice selection of greens, veggies, bell peppers, and little heirloom tomatoes that were just ripe. I had the bleu cheese dressing and it was very good. If it wasn't house-made they sure fooled me.
We really enjoyed our first time here. Prices are quite reasonable for locally- sourced, fresh ingredients, service was excellent. They just recently started serving dinner and I have to say they are doing great. They are locally famous for their breakfasts and lunches and we will...
Read moreThis review is based on two visits. I am a baker and previous restaurant owner and generally won't leave negative feedback. My pre-retirement career has me driving a semi truck and I occasionally pick up fish across the street. While waiting to be loaded, I decided to have lunch. I ordered the fish sandwich with fries, served on focaccia bread. This is not focaccia bread; it's fluffy white bread formed to look like focaccia. I wouldn't order it again, but the sandwich and fries were otherwise fine. They had large individually wrapped peanut butter cookies on the counter, so I grabbed one for the road. That cookie was way too old and should have been discarded days earlier. In addition, it was never a good cookie. It was made using shortening instead of real Butter and tasted like it. That's something you expect from a grocery store bakery, but not a quaint coffee shop. After that experience, a few days later I found myself back there around breakfast time and decided to give them another chance. I ordered bacon and eggs. The bread choice listed on the menu was toast or fresh baked biscuit. As I often do, I asked if I could substitute a single pancake as a bread choice. The answer was, "sure." The breakfast was okay, though my over-easy eggs were over-hard. I had no complaints until I received the bill. I was charged three dollars for the pancake! As I mentioned, this is a common ask on my part and I've never been charged for it. Pancake batter is one of the cheapest things in the kitchen. The pancake was single and small. To sum it up, the prepared food was average. The baked goods were substandard, and the added cost was unacceptable. I'm sitting in my truck across from the restaurant as I type this, eating a protein bar. I...
Read moreThe coffee house has been one of my favorite places to have breakfast when I go to the coast for a number of years. This particular time, I had raved about it to some friends and we drove 30 miles from where we were staying in order to eat there. At the coffee House, you order at the counter and I was first in line in front of my friends. I admit that I am a high maintenance orderer. For example, I don’t eat eggs or dairy so I when I go out to eat, I ask that small adjustments be made. Because of this and because we were excited to be there, I made sure that I was very friendly with the young lady behind the counter taking my order. I could tell immediately that she didn’t like me. Her attitude towards me was impatient and downright surly. I tried apologizing to her and she wouldn’t even look at me. She just ignored me and continued writing my order down on her little pad of paper. She went to ring it up and I could see because of my amendments that she was ringing everything in individually so that it would be as expensive as possible and my order ended up coming to $34 for a regular sized breakfast. I attempted to appeal to her but she wasn’t having it. I was embarrassed and I didn’t want to cause a scene so I paid for it. Over the next few days, it really bothered me. I wish that I would’ve handled it differently. It’s really violating to be nice to someone who is supposed to be serving you and have them treat you so disdainfully and at the same time, essentially steal from you as there is no way the breakfast was worth that. I will...
