This was a pretty cool stop. We've been to Newport several times and never made it here so this time I made it a point. Glad I did. We spent about an hour and a half checking out the exhibits and some of the films available. The theater has a selection screen to choose from among 15 different movies - we only watched 2 but they were both good. Displays and information are heavily focused on the history of the local fishing industry with lots of great information. Read moreFor an overview of the history of Lincoln County/Newport, this museum is solidly good and sits in a lovely, huge old home overlooking the river. But the exhibit that just reached out & Grabbed me! was the one about kelp/seaweed by Josie Iselin! It was like learning that your "ugly dog" can be groomed attractively and is actually a rare, valuable breed!! Iselin covers the art,.. the biological science,.. the history of,.. and cultural values in,.. kelp/seaweed. The exhibit lasts runs until October 1st. And I'm thinking of driving back to see it...
Read moreGreat museum! It has a pretty large (150 people or so) theater with 18 historical films ranging from 2 to 3 minutes up to almost 30 minutes. The films cover local indigenous peoples' history to settlement history to more modern times. It has a great section on local sustainable fishing, a section on NOAA, a section displaying quilts made by local quilters for veterans (amazing work), and a gift shop.
