Smugglers Cove Resort — Hotel in Newport

I have been coming here for over 30 years, back when the living rooms had hot tubs that backed up against the bay windows. Down at the street there was a water wheel that was working half the time, so sad to see it get taken out. Next door the green building used to be Gracie's with great food and drinks. I had seen a few bar fights taken outside but for the majority of the time it was a peaceful place. Times have changed, no more hot tubs in the rooms, no more water wheel to watch spin, no more Gracie's next door, now you have to go north up to Depot Bay to go to the other Gracie's restaurant (Sea Hag - good chowder but not as good as the Rouge Brewery. Georgie's Beach Grill right up the road past the Yaquina Bay lighthouse also has great chowder). I've tried all chowder in town and nothing comes close to these, especially not Mo's.

The review is supposed to be about this place but it is the town that makes this place so special. Honest after 30 years of coming here I've seen very little done, yeah TV's have been upgraded and the kitchen got a paint job, maybe a few more decor in the bathrooms but for the most part as this town has grown and improved this place hasn't. This will always be my goto place in Newport for the location and view, I've stayed here during all seasons; sunny, cloudy, and rainny.

The floors creaks even when walking like a stealth ninja, no one could sneak up on you here. There is no BBQ, they've wanted to build a BBQ area in the back but just don't have the resources. I feel sorry for this place because it seems they barely make it by every year. Our blinds right now in room 5 I'm afraid were installed or meant not to be only supported on the ends without anything in the center. One of the bar stools us missing a screw so the back is about to come out. Walking in the bathroom you can feel where the floor is sinking in one area.

Management is sketchy. Arrived for Memorial Day Weekend. Arrived after hours snd our name was not on the list. Another couple was trying to get into their unit and it was occupied. Frustrated after driving 10 hours we decided to get a room. Returned an hour later and management was there. Informed them of the mix up and that we had to pay for a hotel. She said she would reimburse hotel expense. After 2 months of emails and unanswered phone calls I have yet to receive refund. Last email to me was that the check was to be...

Hosts were very accommodating and nice to deal with, the place has a great view of the marina and the bridge. The place is a wee outdated and the king bed had a really soft and bouncy mattress. Not the best for sleeping soundly. The master bath was too tiny to accommodate 2 people. Some stains on the carpet added to the disappointment. With just a little updating this place would be such an awesome place to stay. We will most likely stay elsewhere on our next...
