Listen, I've chased the ghosts of street food from the back alleys of Bangkok to the smoky taquerias of Tijuana, where the real magic happens in the grit and the grind, not some sanitized chain of mediocrity. But damn if Honeygrow in Rockville doesn't sneak up on you like a well-aged bourbon in a dive bar—unpretentious, bold, and leaving you with that warm buzz of satisfaction. Tucked into the Pike & Rose district, this spot isn't trying to be the next fine-dining temple; it's a rowdy shout-out to customizable bowls that hit like a freight train of flavor, without the pretension. In a town where the suburbs can feel as bland as overcooked polenta, Honeygrow is the rogue element, the underdog slinging fresh, fast, and fierce.
I sauntered in around midday, the kind of hour when the office drones descend like locusts, but the line moved with the efficiency of a well-oiled kitchen brigade. The setup's simple, almost disarmingly so: you pick your base—stir-fry noodles or a salad that doesn't wilt under pressure—then load it up with proteins, veggies, and sauces that scream "build your own adventure." I went for the sweet soy stir-fry with steak, broccoli, carrots, and a hit of those crispy onions for that textural pop. Cooked to order on the flat-top, it arrived steaming, the beef tender as a lover's whisper, not chewy like some budget hack job. The sauce? A glossy embrace of umami and subtle heat that coats without drowning, balanced by the crunch of fresh greens. Paired it with a side of their Brussels sprouts—roasted to caramelized perfection, charred just enough to evoke those late-night market stalls in Hanoi. And the portions? Generous, unapologetic, the kind that leave you full but not regretting life's choices.
What gets me—what really hooks you in this game—is the people behind the counter. No starched uniforms or fake smiles here; these kids move like they've got fire in their veins, flipping woks with the precision of a sushi chef and a dash of that American hustle. Rockville's got its share of chains, but Honeygrow feels alive, sourced from local farms where possible, with an eye on keeping things clean and green without preaching about it. In a world of fast food that's mostly regret in edible form, this place delivers joy: a kaleidoscope of flavors in a bowl that costs about as much as a decent cocktail. I left with a grin, belly happy, thinking maybe the suburbs aren't all doom and strip malls. If you're in Rockville and craving something that punches above its weight, hit Honeygrow. It's not revolution, but in the daily grind, it's damn...
Read moreI was curious to try Honeygrow as it is close by to me and as a Chinese american, I like stir fry.
I ordered pickup so I didn't spend much time in the store or interact with the staff basically at all. However, I personally couldn't care about service or atmosphere. The only thing that matters to me is food and I gotta say, I was very disappointed with the food.
Before the negatives, I will say that the noodles used were very good. They were cooked well, springy and chewy and actually had flavor.
Everything else though, was not so good. I ordered a make your own bowl with Noodles, "Roasted Steak", snow peas, carrots, onions, and Sweet Soy Five Spice Sauce - trying to emulate typical ingredients that you might find in a traditional chinese stir fry.
The steak looked and tasted like it came straight out of a microwaveable TV dinner. It was perfectly rectangular slices of chewy, dry, flavorless beef that 100% came off of a conveyor belt at some mass production facility hundreds of miles away
The snow peas, carrots and onions were fine with the exception that the snow peas could have been cooked a bit longer and taken on more flavor.
The sauce was also disappointing. I know it's called "Sweet" Soy Five Spice, but it was 90% Sweet, 10% Soy. The entire dish needed more salt, and maybe half as much sugar.
Also all of the promotional imagery on Honeygrow's websites shows that the stir fry is made with woks, but there was no Wok Hei whatsoever in the dish. Cooking with a wok on high heat is supposed to add flavor to the dish that you can't get with a normal stove and pan, but it wasn't there.
I can't speak to the salad or "honeybar" parts of the menu, but I am curious as to why all of the stir fry options on the menu are Asian-ish but then all of a sudden there are Caesar, Cobb and Greek salad options, and then the honeybar has exclusively American flavor profiles like Brownie Crumble and Apple Pie. I know it's an upper management decision and not the owner of this specific location but still, it's odd to look at a menu where you can buy Red Coconut Curry stir fry, a Cobb Salad and Apple Pie topped froyo all in the same location.
The meal just felt like gentrified stir fry. What it lacked in flavor and soul it made up for in chic interior design. I don't see why you'd buy honeygrow stir fry over any of the dozens of authentic or non-authentic chinese or thai restaurants in the area (unless you're vegan I guess).
Would've been 1/5 stars but because the noodles were actually...
Read moreI am sitting in Honeygrow as I type this review because I could not wait to leave to let you all know about this business.
Honeygrow is located in Rockville, Maryland right off the main strip next nestled between a Cava and Slapfish. I have never heard of it before, but liked the idea of creating my own stir-fry bowl from a selection of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Upon arrival there is ample parking and the staff was nice. They use a kiosk ordering system, which allows you to take as much time as you need for service. The store was clean, including the kitchen area, which is open for all to see.
I decided to create my own stir-fry and chose handmade egg noodles, roasted cauliflower, roasted garlic, spinach, mushrooms, chicken, shrimp and a sesame garlic sauce. No drink (but a cup for water) and I chose dine in.
The food was served in a black ramen soup style bowl on a metal or aluminum tray.
Upon first glance I was visually happy with the food. You could see the toppings I ordered and that it was nicely sauced and seasoned.
First bite: ABSOLUTE HEAVEN. The sesame garlic sauce is the star of this dish! The perfect taste of sweet and savory with the gentle pings of garlic throughout. The handmade egg noodles (resemble ramen curly noodles) were perfectly cooked. Slightly crunch to the cauliflower, chicken moist, shrimp awesome, a beautiful fast and fresh meal. Also, filling.
I 100 percent recommend Honeygrow to anyone looking for a fast, well-prepared and super tasty meal. They also have pre-designed bowls, salads and special sides to choose from. I am happy I found this place and whenever I am in Rockville will come have...
