Let me tell you a story.. a story of Guthrie's Chicken restaurant based out of Alabama. One day a University of Georgia student visited such Guthrie's and tasted a wonderful chicken tender and Guthrie's dipping sauce. Later he and his friend "came up with a great idea of a place that would provide a cool place that sold chicken tenders and a sauce", a sauce eerily similar to Guthrie's non-patented sauce. The rest as they say is history and seems they began placing their stores all around campuses often times right down the street from Guthrie's. Well, it would seem that Raising Cane's followed suit within the Charleston. However, while I will say that their chicken portions are larger than Zaxby's and certainly bigger than Guthrie's, their prices are also through the roof. Is the chicken -that- much better? No. Want the sauce? Kraft Mayonnaise, Dales Steak Sauce (or Worchestershire), some ketchup and black pepper. Add anchovies juice if you want the Zaxby's version.
I like this place no more and no less than Zaxby's. The staff at this one though leaves little to be desired. They're not all out rude, though, they really don't belong in a business where customer interaction is necessary. Perhaps it's the owners they have to work for? Their sweet tea is far better than Zaxby's and Guthrie's combined, I believe the secret is not just the brew (probably Luzziane) but the fact that they keep it churning in that fountain thingy. The toasted bread is so soft and fresh tasting/texture as well. The fries as many have said though, are just, bleh, bland, but is far better than their coleslaw.
Revised - 05/05/2017. I would have bumped this to 4, maybe even 5 stars, as their fries seemed to have gotten a boost in taste (pretty good crinkle fries). However and this is a big deal. I'd say within the past 4 months, we've gone 5 times (my son loves this place but has a stomach of steel compared to the rest of us). The past three times, one or more of us have gotten sick. Of the past three times, I've felt nauseated afterwards. Two of those past three times, I've had liquid poo. Once of those three times, I've vomited. Coincidence? I believe either temps are not being kept in storage and/or they're trying so hard to keep up with demand (we go during Charleston beginning busy hours of 6-7pm) thus under-cook the chicken. No, I haven't complained to the store or corporate, because in my lifetime, I've found doing so resulted in, nothing, no change, no matter how pleasant I was with the complaint. And I'm not a sue-happy individual either, so there's that. Of the most recent two visits, my daughter has vomited after eating there. The first time, I chalked i up to coincidence (despite me having liquid poo). The second time she vomited after Cane's (from this location at least), more-less confirmed, we won't be back, not necessarily by choice mind you, but, out of necessity, as I sorta do fear for our health to continue...
Read moreRaising Cane's has continued to be a surprise entry into the chicken restaurant genre in the Charleston area. When I first saw the news that they were coming, my first thought was " how could there possibly be room for another chicken outlet?" They are a pleasant surprise. The menu is chicken strips, and only chicken strips. When RC first started, the strips came out blazing hot and the heat could only be put out by copious amounts of dipping sauce. I finally found that they have honey mustard which is great and I find the Cane's sauce too tart. My wife, however, loves it. Different strokes I guess. A couple days ago we returned after quite a break. No reason except that the opportunity just hadn't come up. This time the chicken came out at a reasonable temperature and was very tasty with no sauce. I got to mention that you can cut the chicken with a plastic forks. Quite a feat recently in other eateries. Great place to go. Great employees...
Read moreI placed my order which contained a cup of ice, which I paid for. When I approached the second window to pick up my meal and my ice, I noticed that I was given the kid's cup. I simply requested a larger cup of ice. When I made the request, the young lady stated that I didn't ask for a large cup of ice. I had no idea that I had to specify which size cup of ice I wanted. Instead of her providing a larger cup of just plain ice, she developed an attitude. Because she developed an attitude, I simply requested my money back because my food doesn't taste wonderful if the service is substandard. I provided the score of two stars because the young lady that took my order initially had manners. We are in the midst of a pandemic and restaurants should be grateful for any customer that they get. One sale lost may not matter, but I will not give my hard earned money to anyone that does not value me as a customer. How hard is it to make...
