My long-standing admiration for the Big Biang Theory Food Truck made the opening of their brick and mortar restaurant in Film Row a highly anticipated event for me. However, my experiences at the new location have been disheartening, leading me to share this review.
Initially, during the soft opening, we were surprised to see the absence of their famous chicken and steak noodle bowls on the menu, leaving us to depart without dining. Our return visit on the official grand opening was, regrettably, more disappointing.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was undermined by music played inconsistently, with long periods of total silence, which detracted from the dining experience. Additionally, the staff’s tendency to congregate at the bar rather than focusing on customer service was noticeable and detracted from the overall experience.
Culinary-wise, the food starkly contrasted with what I had enjoyed at the food truck, like many other reviewers have stated. The steak in my noodle bowl was undercooked, far from the ‘rare’ quality advertised. This issue, coupled with the noodles being overly oily and lacking in flavor, was a significant letdown. Our request for “baby spice” was also not honored, with the dish being served at the regular spice level, contrary to our waiter’s assurances.
What compounded the letdown was the owner’s apparent indifference. Known for his combative responses to customer feedback on social media, his presence in the restaurant did not translate into engagement with patrons or any visible concern for our dining experience. This lack of interaction, particularly from an owner, is a stark contrast to what one might expect in terms of customer service and receptiveness to feedback.
In conclusion, after two unsatisfactory visits, we have decided not to return to the Big Biang Theory restaurant. While the food truck continues to hold a special place in our hearts, the restaurant, unfortunately, falls short of the high standards set by its mobile counterpart.
Edit: The owner’s response is so generic, it feels like ChatGPT had a hand in it. It really drives home my point in the review about the owner not showing interest in making...
Read moreDecided to hop over and try Big Biang for the first time tonight - we got the cumin braised beef, the cream cheese & onion wontons, and the fried enoki.
The service was great. Very friendly and inviting- and others that have recommended BB have said the same. Definitely lived up to that, and especially with y'all being so busy today, I will never take that for granted. Always greatly appreciated as a customer. :)
For the food, I have to be honest and say I had mixed feelings. Certain things were great, but I was slightly underwhelmed overall vs. what I'd expected.
I felt like the wonton portion was small for the price. The flavor was solid and they were very well wrapped, and we really liked the sauce, just wish they were bigger than bite size or maybe increase to 8, though I understand food cost is nuts right now, so I don't envy trying to set that, especially just starting out in a new location.
The enoki was good- kind of oily (I say that more as a heads-up for anyone reading this, really not an issue in my book considering the dish).
The noods themselves were fantastic. Some of the best I've had, here in OKC or otherwise. My main letdown was with beef. It was tender and cooked well, but felt more plain than I'd expect, especially in contrast with the flavor of the noodles. I read through some of the other comments and I can totally level with the salt preference- I don't think it was a salt/no salt issue. From my non-expert culinary opinion, I wish it had more of a unique flavor than just feeling it was pan-cooked. I feel like that would elevate the whole dish.
All-in-all, I will definitely return again and I'm excited to see another truck to brick-and-mortar success story unfolding. Congrats on that! I can see you read through your reviews so it was worth my time to pass on my thoughts, whatever worth they may have, lol. Merry Christmas to y'all and best of fortune for your business in the...
Read moreDon't read this review. Hurry up and go get these noodles!!! OMG. Fresh hand pulled noodles, tender, pliable, and yet with a small resistance and chewiness. I could eat these noodles every day. I had the cumin braised beef noodles. A perfect balance of savory, spicy, complex, aromatic goodness makes up the broth. And the amazing scent of cumin wafts towards your nose for every bite. They don't skimp on the beef! Nice size chunks cooked to falling off the bone tender. The bok choy was a nice counterpoint. Giving you the veg flavor...slightly grassy and also perfectly cooked. They nailed it, absolutely nailed what makes a great, hearty and satisfying noodle bowl! After eating mine, I ordered a bowl to go for my main squeeze and returned the very next week to get a bowl for my daughter. These are noodles you just have to SHARE the news about! Since then I've gone back and tried the traditional noodles with beef. Noodles were on point. The beef in this dish however was shredded and dry to my tastes. I would order traditional noodles again but substitute in the other beef or try the chicken. I am not a big eater so didn't get a chance to explore their appetizers but hope to soon. I had whatever the specialty drink was for this month. It was good.... even better the drinks get cheaper after 8 PM. The ambiance is fun casual. Several movie posters on the walls featuring Asian films or films with prominent Asian actors. It has a modern, hip feel to it. Loved the exposed piping on the ceilings and the bar. Additionally, after 8 they turn off the regular lighting and go to mood lighting and louder music. It would be a fun place to take a date, sit at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere. Earlier in the day it's very appropriate for family style dining or grabbing a great lunch...
