They have a relatively new kids area that from what I understand is always open. It is very nice. They have an area where you can color stained glass papers to hang along their walls. They provide books with step-by-step instructions on how to color different animals, flowers, etc. They have an area with mirrors set up to do Self-Portraits along with instruction pages to help improve your skills. They have four large easels set up for drawing, whatever you wish to draw.
On the other side of the room they have building blocks with colored panels inside, several other toys that are sensory, puzzles, and mostly art or color theory related. Couches and comfortable seating with a wide variety of books to choose from for a reading break
On top of all of that, they have an additional room in the back with more toys. A private area if you need to nurse, headphones for sensory sensitive children, sensory stepping stones and a large selection of multicolored pillows to sit upon.
Keep in mind, everything I have mentioned so far is probably an 800-1,000 square foot kids area. They also have what I was told is the largest, Chihuly glass sculptures collection in the United States, they're absolutely beautiful. They also have very helpful staff that helps explain the stories behind the glass pieces. One of them I found particularly interesting was a boat filled with glass. The artist wanted to see how the art would go with nature so he placed the glass pieces in a river. Local teenagers would bring the glass pieces back to him in a boat. To commemorate this, they made a piece in a boat.
The ladies at the front desk were also extraordinarily helpful, We went with small children and they took the time to go over the map and showed the areas they thought would be most interesting to them. We stayed about 2 and 1/2 hours and actually lost track of time because we were having such a great time. So we had to run to get to our next activities.
Highly recommend going and seeing all they have to offer. The cafe staff was incredibly kind as well, they also have classes they offer. Today they had a kind of screen printing class, I have no other information as we did...
Read moreI was in Oklahoma City for a weekend trip and needed something to do during the day. I went to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art on a Saturday around 2pm. The parking was easy to find and very close to the entrance of the museum. Parking is free on the weekend. Admission for adults is usually $12 but since the lower level of the museum was transitioning from one exhibit to another, they discounted by ticket to $10 since I wouldn't be able to enjoy the entire museum. I thought that was a fair deal and I am impressed that they were willing to discount the tickets for their guests. The museum wasn't very crowded for a weekend, which was nice and relaxing. Their gift shop is small and a little pricey. I was hoping to get a t-shirt but I didn't see any for sale. Next to the ticket desk there is a huge window that goes from the bottom floor to the third or fourth floor that has a giant blow glass sculpture by Chihuly. The bottom floor has the rotating art exhibit so I was unable to see that during the transition. They have a beautiful staircase that you can walk up or you can take the elevator. The second floor has artwork from several different European countries and a few notable American artists. I thought the grouping of the artwork was rather odd. They had groupings such as maritime artwork, portraits, and landscape. It seemed odd because the groupings had artwork from several different centuries together. For example, they had beautiful french oil paintings from the 1800s next to pop culture paintings from the early 2000s... However, I will say that all of the artwork they had was incredible. I wish they had prints of some of these paintings in the giftshop but I didn't see any available. The third floor has the Chihuly exhibit. I believe this exhibit is permanent. I was completely blow away by this exhibit. It is so dramatic with the dark backgrounds and the light illuminating the blown glass perfectly. This exhibit is a hidden gem of the state of Oklahoma! I would highly recommend visiting this museum while you are in town. The tickets are affordable and it's a great place to go when the weather is not great for...
