Can't always eat in here, so I rely on the salad bar carry-out. They have changed things much to the disadvantage of carryout customers while charging the same price. The container for soup is much downsized. You get two large containers without compartments and soggy juices mix with bread or dessert or foods that do not taste well together. That's your tough luck.
I complained because I go for a decent amount of soup, but they cheat you now with the cup size container downsized from the 2 cup to a 1 cup. I was offered the little bit larger soup container in exchange for one of my big containers. Nothing fair about that either. I paid $12 for about $6 worth of food.
I was told they want to encouraging eating in, so their approach is to cheat carryout customers, particularly restricting them from the soups and providing containers inappropriate for a mixed food bar. I would gladly pay more if I could get what I what. They could charge by weight like cafeterias do, but the bottom line is richer by cheating people who cannot stay to eat, while eat-ins can consume unlimited quantities for an even cheaper price and not have to take home soggy bread or dessert.

Read moreThe Hoss's restaurant chain used to be so much better. I've been going to the Hanover Hoss's as well as other Hoss's restaurants for years and have fond memories of going from my childhood. The problem is that they never really seem to change the place for the better. They used to make a really good Hoss's Burger till one day when all of a sudden it wasn't the same, the buns were flat and it just wasn't as good as it was. I also used to really enjoy the Hoss's Choice steak but they got rid of that years ago. Now they have you ordering food at your table instead of at the entrance and that is really annoying when all you want it the soup and salad bar and you have to wait for a waitress.
The decor has not changed since the place was built, the only thing different are the super tacky CFL bulbs in the wagon wheel lights. They didn't even bother to put the mason jars back on that they had with the traditional incandescent bulbs. With Edison bulbs making a trendy comeback they should really spend a few dollars are replace the ugly CFLs with Edison bulbs and put the mason jars back up.
I feel like this chain is probably on its last leg and might not be around for much longer which is a shame because it used to be...
Read moreWe had a wonderful dinner at Hoss's recently. Before last night I hadn't been here for maybe 20 years. I learned last night that I've been missing out!
I got a crab cake with salad bar add on. The crab cake was spot on "Maryland style" and was perfect. It was much better than I had anticipated.
The salad bar is actually really good. They had 4 or 5 soup options that all looked really good. I tried cream of chicken and cheeseburger soup, both were really good. The salad station has everything you ever dreamed of for salads. The lettuce was suprisingly fresh and crispy, and everything was fresh.
The dessert station has something for everyone. I got ice cream, no bake cookies, and a cheesecake cup.
Our server was really good. She was on it. Kept the drinks filled and empty plates away.
Hoss's just earned a spot in our regular...
