A pilgrimage to the Famous 4th Street Delicatessen in Philadelphia is more than a meal; it's a slice of culinary history. My recent visit to this legendary establishment left me in awe, and I can't wait to take you on a flavorful journey.
Ambiance: 4/5
As you enter, you're greeted by the bustling and classic atmosphere of a traditional deli. The walls are adorned with vintage memorabilia, creating an air of nostalgia and authenticity. It may not be the spot for an intimate dinner, but it's the ideal venue for a hearty, no-nonsense meal that feels like a warm hug from your grandmother.
Service: 4.5/5
The service at Famous 4th Street Delicatessen is welcoming and efficient. The staff exudes a friendly, no-frills charm, which adds to the old-school diner experience. You won't find white-tablecloth service here, but that's not what you come for - it's all about the food and the genuine hospitality.
The Deli Classics: 5/5
Now, onto the star of the show: the food. Famous 4th Street Delicatessen has a menu brimming with iconic deli offerings. Their towering sandwiches are a work of art. Whether you choose the colossal Reuben, the pastrami, or the matzo ball soup, the flavors are the stuff of legends. The portions are beyond generous, so bring your appetite or a friend to share with. Unique Offerings: 4/5
In addition to the classics, Famous 4th Street Delicatessen offers a variety of innovative twists and specialties, such as the "South Street" sandwich, which combines corned beef with coleslaw and Russian dressing. It's a unique spin that honors Philly's culinary diversity while staying true to deli traditions.
Price: 4/5
While the prices are reasonable considering the portion sizes, dining here is a commitment to hearty eating. Be prepared to either share or take home leftovers, as the servings are quite substantial.

The only minor drawback might be the wait times, particularly during peak hours. It's a popular spot, and sometimes, the line can be long. However, once you taste the food, the wait is easily forgiven.

Read moreAMAZING meal at this deli that's been around for 101years! New owners took over 9 months ago but have kept the menu and ambiance the same. Four solid pages of things to order!!! We tried the app sampler (see pics for description). It was enormous! And delicious! It came with three giant bowls of sour cream, apple sauce and gravy. Even though I was no longer hungry, I ordered the corned beef special sandwich, and took the whole thing home with me! I did. Of course eat this half sour pickle there, and it was fantastic. A sign of cucumber and onion salad with my sandwich, and it was awesome. After dinner, we were ready for a nap....but they brought us complimentary chocolate chip cookies. Fresh Baked!!! I would be remiss if I didn't mention the best waiter I've had in ages, Kevin. He really knew the history of the restaurant and was able to make some great suggestions from the menu. We had a ton of questions, and he was so calm and answered everything!!! The atmosphere of the place was awesome, there were old pictures on every wall that really showed the history of the diner. I'm already planning my next visit here to check out some other things that were on the menu. It's such a warm and welcoming place with so much yummy food. Oh, when you first walk in you can see all the baked goods and the meats and the salads on displaying cases at the front, super cool. I suggest making a day of this and walking around South Street and Penn's landing in addition to grabbing food at this super...
Read moreTonight I had one of the worst meals and experiences I've ever had here. I don't know if it's because they sold the place or what...but here we go.
I ordered the Brisket on the recommendation of employees. I usually get the Pastrami but I wanted to branch out.
The Brisket is absolutely disgusting. Seasoning does not live here. It basically tastes like ground beef but sliced up without any seasoning whatsoever. The amount is solid but it just doesn't taste like anything at all.
In before "we don't season for a reason": I've order the Pastrami solo, and it's MILES better than this. If you are reading this and not sure, just get the Pastrami.
I was encouraged to get cheese, so I got chedder only to get home and realize it wasn't melted or anything and infact breaking apart into the container. I know I didn't ask for a "melt" but like...idk. Seems very odd they'd just put some cold cheese on my sandwich.
The bread was ok.
I specifically asked the front of house staff for a individual side of their Potatoe salad. I saw my invoice and questioned it but was assured that it was correct.
I got home, no potato salad to be found.
I walked back the half mile to get what I paid for only to be handed 4.0 oz cup of potato salad. What even is this?
I'm extremely disappointed from this experience and I probably won't be coming back. Especially after spending $33 + the $5 tip
It's sad because I used to...
