My not-girlfriend got back from Spain recently, and all she has been able to talk about is the Spanish summer drink "Tinto de Verano," which is essentially just a mix of red wine and soda. I'm an uncultured swine and didn't know it existed until last week.
She had been anxiously awaiting to go to Superfolie all day, as they are a European wine bar that served the red gold, but didn't open until 3pm.
We walked in right at open to a beautiful interior flooded with natural light. I don't know if the bartender was annoyed at our early arrival or what but he was NOT messing with us at all. He was ice cold, but I'm an empath and maybe he was having a bad day. I been there.
We ordered a round of Tintos ($13), a snack plate, and the Tuna Crudo. I took my first sip of a Tinto, and was not sold at all. The combination of red wine and grapefruit soda just wasn't doing it for me. It felt like 2 things that just weren't meant to be together.
However, the strangest thing happened. In the blink of an eye, my drink was finished and I found my entire being CRAVING another TDV.
We ended up having 4 each, and I am now a believer. It reminded me of my first Aperol Spritz. My initial reaction was "Yuck..." but next thing I knew I had demolished it and just wanted another one.
I need to shout out my boy Federico Vargas, a Spanish innkeeper who invented the drink in the 1920s to keep the locals refreshed in a hot Spanish summer. Talent hits a target no one else can hit, genius hit's a target no one else can see.
Thank you Superfolie, for making me a TDV believer!!

Read moreWe met Pete (one of the partners) a few weeks ago at Lone Wolf in Kingston, NY and said we’d come check out Superfolie. We finally made good on that promise this week and now we’re kicking ourselves for not coming out sooner.
The space strikes that rare balance of effortlessly cool and genuinely welcoming. We started with the duck prosciutto, which was rich, silky, and perfectly portioned. Then came the tuna crudo, clean and vibrant, with just the right hit of acidity. Every dish felt deliberate without being overworked.
The team clearly cares. You can feel it in the service, the design, and the ambiance that they created here. Pete and crew have built something truly special in Philly. Superfolie isn’t just a wine bar, it’s a place you want to linger for a few glasses of wine while shooting the shit with the staff..
We’ll be back, and we’ll be...
Read moreWas excited to try this place out for happy hour. The happy hour menu is very limited - there were only 3 wine options and 2 snack options on the day that I went. I was also SO disappointed that there were only 3 total red wine by-the-glass options. Really? It's a wine bar! Still, we ordered 3 assorted glasses of wine and 3 snacks... the total bill was $100 including tax, tip, and 3% credit card charge. The food was not stellar; every dish was a miss in a major aspect of balance. One snack was missing acidity, one was missing enough salt, and the other too fatty. Between the weak happy hour options, limited red wine, and disappointing food - the price was the nail in the coffin. I'd prefer Sally, Tria, Bloomsday, or Fishtown Social for my...
