Where to even begin? These folks clearly care more about making a happy buck then they do about their customers. We recently ordered desserts for our wedding reception from this location, since we wanted to support local businesses, but I deeply regret not having our caterer handle everything, because I at least know we would've enjoyed it. The pies were just okay, but the macarons did not resemble any I have ever had, and they are my favourite baked good, which I have gotten from many a French bakery. Macarons are supposed to be light and airy, they are supposed to melt in your mouth in a burst of flavor. What we got from Pane d'Amore were hard and crunchy like they had been overbaked and were 3 days old. They were supposed to be coffee flavored, but they didn't really taste like coffee. Sure, they tasted like Nutella, but if I wanted Nutella, I would go buy it, and it would be a heck of a lot cheaper then the $234 I wasted. We weren't told until the day we picked the macarons up that they had to be special ordered from another baker (in Bainbridge, I believe). If you don't make them in house and you don't usually offer them, then don't say you have them available, just so you can make a sale. I understand that this is a small business, so taking a loss sucks, but they wouldn't even let us return them for a partial refund. If I don't like them, why would my guests? On top of everything else, they wanted us to return the cheap plastic containers. They also got back over 2/3 of the "macarons" because, guess what? My guests didn't like them either. Macarons are a tough bake, and that's why they're so expensive, but if I'm going to pay to special order something, I better like it. We are in no way rich, so that was a lot of money to spend to be so deeply disappointed, and we were essentially told by Julia there was nothing the shop could do to rectify it, since macarons aren't something they usually carry and they couldn't resale them. Then don't tell me you carry them in the...
Read moreI came for the almond croissants since I love them on our Celebrity cruises. On Google Maps, it looked only like a few blocks from the Palace Hotel. It is actually up town in the residential area. If you go up the stairs behind the Haller Statue and Fountain and down towards the Fire Bell Tower, it is a few blocks up the street/hill.
I bought two almond croissants, a chocolate croissant, ham and cheese croissant, and a blueberry scone. The almond croissants were so worth the walk with plenty of almond filling and much bigger than on the cruise ship. I thought all the pastries were very good and delicious. Even eating a few days later (keeping it in the fridge), the scone was not dried out or hard - still good!
I had planned to go to Better Living through Coffee to get a coffee after I had gone to the bakery. Better Living through Coffee also sells the same almond and chocolate croissants and other pastries (smaller selection) from Pane d'Amour bakery. I was smiling and shaking my head, but at least I walked off a few of the calories by going to the bakery myself.
The man working the counter was fast and efficient and thanked everyone for stopping in. Good experience and glad I...
Read moreVery good pastries and bread, but you pay for the quality (5 star food, 3 star prices :)). The plain croissant ($2.75) was flaky and delicious. The cinnamon roll ($3.75) which is kind of a cross between a sticky bun and a cinnamon roll, was just the right sweetness and the raisins they used were especially good. The ham and cheese croissant ($4) was solid, but could've used a little more ham and cheese for my taste. The sourdough baguette-type loaf ($5.75) had a browned, crunchy crust, nice, holey and soft interior "crumb structure" as the bread people say, and had excellent sourdough flavor. Would be great with some good butter or just plain so you can really taste the sourdough. You won't be disappointed with the...
