Bridge City Cafe - Essex House — Restaurant in Portland

I was 8 months pregnant and need to use the bathroom badly while on a walk with my husband. We went in assuming we would have to buy something in order for me to use the restroom so my husband went straight for the line to buy something to drink. Myself needing to use the restroom urgently went straight for the restroom. The person at the counter started to yelling rudly saying something to the sort of "where do you think your going". I immediately said my husband s in line to buy something while continuing to head toward the bathroom. The woman behind the counter continued to shout rudley telling me to stop. Possiblely a little emotionally incuced by my pregnancy I told my husband to come on and said I'll never come here again and left to find the next closest restroom, which was probably a Starbucks or something. I've never tried the food and I don't plan on it. I do not want to support a business that would treat a person that way and especially a fully pregnant woman. I'm sure they'd have some excuses about the kind of stuff they deal with being downtown, but they should have some decernment and...

Always fresh food. Very pleasant employees. Hard workers. Even when there are customers preceding, the line moves fast because the employees work hard to move things along. Fremont Chicken Walnut Salad sandwich on the Cafe's homemade bread is dee-lish. Chocolate chip cookies that accompany all full sandwiches are scrumptious. --Steve Kenney

Recently updated on 12/11/2023. You ask, "how are we doing?" I would say, "Just fine." Today I had the Fremont Chicken Salad Sandwich & Caesar Salad. Very generous, moist chicken salad. Lovely bread. Delicious Caesar salad with Ranch dressing. Freshly baked chocolate chip cookie with lots of chocolate. I would say, "Just fine."

Updated 5/13/2025. The receipt ask "How are we doing?" I would say, "Just fine." Had a combination, 1/2 Fremont Walnut Chicken Salad Sandwich on wheat with a Caesar Salad (no cheese, please). Very pleasant representative took my order and tossed the salad. Another representative made my chicken salad sandwich. Yummy, yummy. I went in at 10am to get 4 chocolate chip cookies, thinking the cookies may still be warm and fresh, soft. What I got was a huge disappointment. The cookies were hard and cold. They tasted like day old. I even had to go back and ask if they were from the day before and she said they were baked this morning. I asked for my money back but was told I'd have to wait for the manager. But being in a hurry I couldn't. So... here I am with 4 bucks worth of cookies that taste more like sawdust.
