Mandarin Hide — Restaurant in Saint Petersburg

I have recommended Mandarin Hyde to many of my friends who are coming in from out of town, but will no longer be doing so due to their outrageously expensive cocktails and the treatment that the staff gave my friend this weekend. As a UNation city partner I will be sure to share my horrible experience with everyone.

My recent visit to Mandarin Hyde in Saint Pete left me utterly disappointed and frustrated. What was meant to be a fun evening turned sour due to the appalling treatment we received from the staff. Despite spending a significant amount on drinks, including $57 on three espresso martinis, our experience quickly took a turn for the worse.

Firstly, the lack of available restroom facilities was inconvenient, with only one stall for women. After patiently waiting in a very long line, my friends and I entered the stall together, unaware of any posted signage indicating otherwise. We were rudely interrupted by a member of the bar staff who aggressively confiscated one of our drinks, a $19 cocktail no less, without providing any prior warning or explanation.

Although a manager later allowed the drink to be remade, the situation escalated unnecessarily when the same staff member ordered us to leave the premises. Despite behaving appropriately and receiving confirmation from the manager that our actions were acceptable, we were forcibly ejected from the bar. This humiliating experience, witnessed by numerous patrons, was entirely unwarranted and unprofessional.

What truly appalled me was the bouncer's blatant disregard for customer dignity. Not only did he embarrass my friend by forcibly removing her from the bar, but he also grabbed her in an inappropriate manner. None of us were even able to finish our outrageously expensive cocktails before being forcibly removed.

There were numerous opportunities for the staff to de-escalate the situation and address our concerns with professionalism, yet they chose the most confrontational approach.

The bouncer's actions not only tarnished our evening but also damaged the reputation of Mandarin Hyde. It's alarming that such behavior is tolerated by the establishment. As a result of this incident, I no longer feel comfortable recommending this bar to others and will be taking my patronage elsewhere. There are plenty of other establishments where I can enjoy espresso martinis without fear of unjust treatment. Was here with my boyfriend and a couple friends last night just standing around talking. One of the female workers out of no where shoved my boyfriend so hard i ended up getting pushed as well. He turned around confused and she said “i asked you to move and you didn’t”. Keep in mind there is loud music and a crowd of people talking. We were so shocked that a worker would do that. I’m not sure when it became ok to push people out of the way instead of getting their attention to move. One of the tall male workers came over and asked what the problem was and took her side. We saw him give her knuckles and say “good job”. WHAT!? I tried to talk to the girls outside but apparently word had traveled and they didn’t want to hear my side of the story. Worst customer service ever. Extremely unbelievable that a worker can get away with pushing a customer and not one employee thought there was anything...

While visiting friends in St. Pete, I specifically requested a night out in this part of town so that I could try Mandarin Hide. My friends obliged, and none were disappointed. The drinks, although pricey, are exquisite. It needs to be said that "pricey" isn't necessarily an unfavorable description of a cocktail. The drinks at Mandarin Hide are made with premium products by gifted hands. The house list of cocktails, while certainly worth sampling, is by no means a limit to the talents of the bartenders. If you have a favorite classic, I say ask for it. I requested my own personal favorite, a Hemingway, and afterwards I felt the need to both compliment and thank the bartender for it.
