Tavern at the Beach — Restaurant in San Diego

Let me just start by saying I remember the old Tavern, before it had a makeover and crowd control. This is a HUGE improvement. So much so I actually stop in now because I'm not concerned a fight's going to break out, like before. It was preeeeety shady then. Sadly the food has declined since that makeover. The menu that came with the makeover 5 pr so years ago was so good I would make it a point to visit. It was fresh, toasted good, well prepared... whole package! We still pop in for drinks with friends but don't eat. Recently we did and we ended up wasting a huge chunk of money because we left half our food on the table. We took the safe route and ordered simple things that are edible if if they're not so great - quesadilla, a simple sandwich and a nacho-style dish. Everything was off - flavor especially. Only thing on was the amount of grease that was on everything after. That night for desert we had several Tums and Maalox tablets. :-( Hopefully it was a fluke and things aren't always that way now. Hopefully the menu brings back some of the excellent they took off, like the CRAZY GOOD stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches, especially the one that had pork in it!! I'll still pop in for drinks...

Came here with friends for the UFC/boxing/Lakers vs warriors playoff. First time here and won't be coming back. This is a college town. Explains why most of the patrons were rude and disrespectful. a person sat at our table because he said he's tired of standing and his crowd decided to join him by resting against our table and leaving their drinks there. No one ask. Rude. I thought their hot wings, ceviche and mahi were good but not great. The mahi was bland. It's super loud in here. You'll have to yell across your table when speaking to your friends. They have edm music at night to dance to if you want but there's a cover charge. Cool staff and the lady...

Everything about this place was great short of the security. They need to just post up and watch from somewhere. They literally walked past every 45 second(literally) and stared at me, and everyone else with each pass. It was simply creepy. Otherwise it would have been a great night. Layout is awesome. Burger was top notch. Just this ominous security presence the entire night is what killed it. Go sit somewhere. Something happens, get involved. Short of that we should not know your there. It's not a prison. Oh and when an obvious local started throwing trash around the bar and everywhere, they did nothing. ...
