Zen 5 — Restaurant in San Diego

I don't really know what to say other than the food was decent but the service was sub par. Our server Vanessa didn't seem to care at all about our table. She stood at the end of our table taking our drink orders as we yelled over the music. Most servers would probably walk to your end so that you aren't yelling over conversations, would they not? She was too busy to take our order (even though the restaurant was basically empty) to fill our drinks, or even bother to tell us her name. We figured out why as soon as we got our bill...18% service charge for a group of 5 adults and a 4 year old. No wonder she didn't care she was already getting a guaranteed tip. GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS!! (For sensitivity, not sure about celiac) Pretty good sushi place. I'm not much of a "foodie" and I'm barely starting to get into sushi but I thought this place was very good. I ordered the special spicy tuna roll. It was tasty but I am personally a fan of the crunch.. maybe I could ask for extra cucumber on the side next time as the extra spicy tuna on top added more of a softer, slimy texture. I also ordered the Ace Roll. It was salmon, imitation crab, and asparagus. Super good, I loved the crunch of the asparagus but I gotta say I prefer cucumber, lol! I also got the fried pork gyoza with veggies, soooo good!!! My girlfriend got the gluten-free Philly roll and the gluten-free citrus roll. She said they did not taste any different than the regular options. She also loved the pairing of the lime and sushi in the citrus roll. Gluten-free soy sauce available as well....

Folks, I've previously given Zen 5 a top rating just so you know. I'm back in the area after a few months so I'm back checking them out again. STILL 5 STARS FOR SURE!!! The food is still fresh and very flavorful and the service is attentive but not intrusive. I love that they serve (option, extra charge) real wasabi, the mini chopped wasabi. It is a bit snappier than the paste wasabi but so much fresher like from the garden! If you have never had real wasabi, better not try it as you'll be hooked and this is one of only a couple San Diego places that I know of that offer it.
