Great place that made the less that stellar dates I had there worth it. It is an incredibly romantic bar located on Polk Street. It is far enough from the hustle and bustle of the club area of Polk street that it feels kind of off the beaten path. You will definitely get a lot of brownie points for suggesting this place as a date location.
A couple things to be warned about. This place will be crowded. Especially for happy hour times and especially on weekend nights. If you don't want to deal with that or actually want to be able to find room for you and your friends to sit I would go any other time. It is such a great intimate location with the one of the best bar atmospheres I have experienced in this city. There is a French theme and the seating and noise level is very conducive to conversation.
I especially like the lighting. It is just dark enough to function but also makes it feel like you are actually getting away when you check it out after a long day. The people here seem super friendly and you will get a usually older working crowd. A lot of dresses and ties from people getting out of the office. Later you will find the locals and the smart visitors checking this place out.
The drinks aren't too expensive. They might be if you are from any other place besides SF but if you are a local you are used to a 9-14 dollar glass of wine and appreciate when its quality.
The wait staff is just incredible. They have a great knowledge of the menu and the wines which are displayed prominently in a unique menu. I especially like that some of the bartenders actually speak French as well. It just makes it feel even more authentic and adds to the atmosphere. I haven't tried the food here but got a few finger snacks which hit the spot and paired well with the several high quality wines that I have tried at this location.
Really the wines are glorious and I recommend you coming here several times to give the reds and whites a shot. You can have a glass of wine anywhere but if you are going to go pay for a single glass or bottle it should be worth leaving your home for and Amelie creates an experience that I could not create in my small one bedroom apartment and for that its worth every penny and strained leg muscles for waiting for someone to get up from one of the coveted seats.
Do yourself a favor and check out one of the not talked about enough spots in SF. It holds its own against more popular bar brethren like Rouge Blanc and Local Edition. Not great for large parties or after work functions but for small intimate gatherings you really can't...
Read moreMy friend really wanted to go to a wine bar and saw this place had $12 flights for happy hour. We came around 5:30 pm and there were a decent amount of people here. We sat ourselves and were given a menu quickly. We wish we had known there were bigger tables in the back, since five of us squished together for a barrel table.
We actually dont know anything about wine, so the waiter said he would make a flight for each of us. When he came back, he gave us different types of wine, so that we all didn't have the same thing. He tried to tell us what they were, but since they were French, we unfortunately didn't know what we had. BUT they were all so amazing!! We also ordered the charcuterie, which came with 3 types of meat, 3 types of cheese, 3 types of honey, olives, pickles, mustard, apples, and a sack of bread. The charcuterie went really well with the wine. We ended up ordering another flight at the end to share.
I really wish I knew which wines we tasted since they were all so good, but I definitely would come back and ask them to create a flight for us again. The staff was really kind and very attentive. I love that their happy hour is daily, and not only on the weekdays. I definitely plan to...
Read moreLoved everything about this place at first. Gotan Project sort of music, but new stuff I was interested to hear for the first time. But then it pivoted to music (and a volume) that would be incredible in a club, but not a wine bar at 9 on a Tuesday. I was really enjoying myself but this sort of intensity in music ruined the meal for me. Putting in AirPods didn’t send the message.
In fairness, I do think the host would’ve been receptive to a recommendation to adjust it. He seemed friendly. But I don’t want to have to be so direct to have to request that somebody change music that they just started playing.
Showing some restraint with BPM and volume would be beneficial. Anything above a resting heart rate (~70 BPM) or a hairdryer at close range (80 dB) will induce a cortisol response - ie stress people out. It was like double this. I think you want to create an environment where people feel at ease so it’s important to be...
