This awesome new spot ::Café Okawari:: just opened in SoMa (near AT&T Park)!!! ^__^ It is located on Townsend between Lusk & Clyde. The more major cross streets are 3rd & 4th. It is tucked neatly between Petite Marlowe (restaurant) & Cento (coffee shop). I’m SOOOO happy because I live in this area and it is a daily struggle to find good food for breakfast, lunch & dinner.
The menu changes regularly and the selection looks great! They also have Daily Specials so check back frequently!
Today, I tried the ::Chicken Katsu Sando:: (sandwich). It was DELICIOUS!!! HALAL Chicken Breast from Wayne’s Farms. They 24-hour brine so it is SUPER JUICY. They also air-dry it so it is CRISP. The shredded cabbage, tonkatsu sauce, Kewpie Mayo & chicken are placed inside soft & fluffy Andersen Bakery Shoku Pan with LOTS of LOVE.
Read moreNice little cafe with that specializes in Japanese chicken katsu sandwiches and curry rice. We tried the katsu sando, katsu curry, and egg sando sandwich.
Highlights definitely include the katsu sandwich, as I think this is by far the strongest product we tried for lunch. The chicken is perfectly fried with a nice crispy breaded texture that doesn’t separate from the meat. The bread is toasted well and the sauce is a great match for the chicken sando. A must try if you’re visiting this cafe. No sides were included in any of these dishes.
Egg sando was alright. I thought the bread was too thick which resulted in a dry sandwich. A bit underwhelming especially for the price ($10+) and no side.
Katsu curry was good and portion was generous. I would’ve preferred more spice and a better hot sauce option. Again the chicken is the star of the show.
Service is great and incredibly fast. It was wonderful to sit outside in the public parklet and share a lunch with the wife. Parking is a pain around 1p on a Wednesday. They also have indoor seating for ~10 folks.
Would recommend as a nice lunch option but the price and value isn’t as high as I’d like. Highly recommend the chicken katsu...
Read moreI didn’t know about this place until one of the founders told me about it and invited me!! GPS location is little off and tree blocks off the name if walking from 3rd st towards 4st street. Cafe is right across from The Beacon roundabout (at the lusk st lights) I ordered Katsu Chicken Plate… wait time was around 3 minutes. During that time I clicked few pictures of the cafe and looked around. Staff was friendly but something was off about customer service. The plate had small portion of rice, and greens with chicken on the top, and a small container of sauce. It was little dry, I saw them pouring a gravy/sauce in a bigger container and I thought it was for me, but no. I would have to give it another try, for me to actually judge the place. I will definitely be back and will order something else. Over all food was good, first Halal Japanese food in the city that I tried, customer service can be little improved, but it definitely is 5...
