I recently visited Marine Submarine as part of my ongoing effort to review various deli and sandwich places in San Francisco. I have also compiled a list of famous sandwich spots in the city, which you can find on my profile.
About Marine Submarine: The place has a spacious interior and is well-maintained, which I consider to be a positive aspect. In fact, despite being established back in 1975, the inside of the store is very clean and well-maintained. Another pro of the store is that despite many sandwich places having extensive menus, Marine Submarine's menu only has around 10-13 items, which I think is the perfect number.
When it comes to the food, you have two options for your bread: Sourdough or French soft. The food was tasty and the sandwich was loaded with a variety of ingredients. Another positive aspect is that the ingredients were fresh. However, eating the sandwich was not as easy as I would have liked, which is a con. Personally, I prefer sandwiches that are a bit less loaded, but this one was not that type of sandwich.
Although the store was big and clean, it was not cozy and we did not enjoy eating there. The lack of a warm and inviting atmosphere makes it an unfavorable dining option. Nevertheless, the tasty and fresh food, combined with the well-maintained interior, make Marine Submarine...
Read moreI used to go to this place for years, moved away and returned to order a sandwich. I was excited to experience the same gentle, old man meticulously making my sandwich as if he's perfected the art, knowing that quality/service/and consistency matters. It appears this business was sold, and the product has completely changed. No more large soft rolls, only sub-par "kind of Sourdough" which isn't even the real thing. The meats have become lesser quality, and the value for what you paying for is completely different. This has become just any ordinary sandwich shop, and it's honestly really sad to see. I think there's hop if the new owners go back and recreate the experience the old ownership had. It's a sandwich shop, literally the one thing you can't mess up if you just follow the instructions which a master of sandwich artistry has laid out for the new ownership.
Sorry for a knock of a review, just a let down considering this was a staple for many years for a trusted, filling...
Read moreIt’s a pretty decent greasy submarine sandwich if you have 45 minutes to waste on your lunch break to wait for a single sandwich you were told would take 15 minutes. What’s worse is the arrogant attitude of the cashier who does little more than take your money nonchalantly and repeatedly tells it’s not ready because he says, it’s been like this a while so nothing’s new. In my book, because it’s been frustrating for a while doesn’t mean it’s normal to take 45 minutes to prepare a sandwich and waste people’s time, mislead folks, and over promise. Also weird that it’s a cash only place in this day and age. It’s almost designed to be a miserable experience. Overall they should revise their entire business model even if the recipes are good. I can’t go back since it’s unpredictable. It’s just a sandwich, not a Michelin meal. Let’s...
