We visited last night as a family. This was my second time, but my first time eating at the store. We came at 7:30, still 90 minutes before closing. My husband just wanted some ice cream, which I guess they would normally blend up. But the girl (I mean girl--a teenager) helping us said the machine was "out of order," or broken, I can't remember which. There were two machines. They looked fine. It appeared she just didn't want to have to clean it.
While we were eating, an online order came in for a shake. The other employee made the shake with one of the two machines. So I guess my husband's order just wasn't as important as an online order? Super unprofessional.
They also were cleaning WHILE we ate. The smell of glass cleaner while trying to eat dessert was very unappetizing. I understand wanting to get off work as early as possible and get cleaning done, but maybe wait till you're between customers?
The redeeming thing about this visit was my smash donut. I just did a simple smash with the Kona ice cream, and they dipped it in Oreos for me. When I could ignore the smell of glass cleaner, my dessert was actually really good--a lot better than the first time I had it.
Will we come back? I'm not sure. The donut case was basically empty. I feel like there is a lot of potential here that isn't being met--the menu isn't explained and the employees are disengaged. I feel like this place needs some TLC in the way of management...
Read moreI really wanted to like it. The concept is fun, the location is cute, and the employees are really friendly. Unfortunately they seem understaffed and under supported. With the smashed doughnuts being their "hot item" it seems ludacris to only have 2 single plate presses to make them. There were probably 15 people in front of us tonight and we waited an hour and a half before getting our order. That kind of turnaround doesnt work for a dessert place. People were just giving up and leaving without getting their orders at all.
The execution of the idea is also lacking. Glazed doughnuts would probably burn or ruin the press (I imagine) so they instead roll the doughnuts in Cinnamon sugar. A fine substitute in theory, except that Cinnamon in particular doesn't pair with all ice cream flavors. It ended up being really messy and sadly, underwhelming.
The employees were apologetic about the wait and were obviously trying very hard. We got an coupon to try them again. I'm hoping their...
Read moreIf Baskin-Robbins and Krispy Kreme had a child, it would be Yonutz. This place has ice cream and donuts, and is famous for smashing them together in either an ice cream sandwich or a shake.
The service is fantastic. I didn't catch the names of those helping us, but they were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and made our first visit a good one. I got the Cookies N Cream SMASHED Donut, and it was decent. My wife had the Biscoff SMASHED Donut and enjoyed it. It's a fun idea, but it's also a sugar overload. I'd like to try the shake in the future to see how that is.
Overall, Yonutz is a fun dessert shop with unique offerings, however, I'd only go here if I wanted a dessert place to catch up with friends. It's not a place I'll crave, and it's not the impromptu night-out-with-the-family stop (though that's certainly debatable). Yonutz is perfect for teenagers and adults who have yet to experience the consequences of aging...
