I have been ordering gluten-free pizza from Upper Crust for several years. The crust is very good and I haven't had a bad reaction even though I am a Celiac. But tonight's experience was terrible and I may not be going back. We ordered a large gluten-free pizza and a gluten-free brownie and a salad to go from Gabe in the restaurant. I very clearly ordered gluten-free, and when Gabe asked me if I wanted bread with the salad I said no I can't eat the bread. When we got home I was serving the pizza and noticed that it was not a gluten-free crust. I would not have known that if I hadn't ordered that pizza many times over the years and didn't know the crust well. Since my boyfriend bought the pizza he called and spoke to Gabe and said that there had been a mistake that we had not received a gluten-free pizza. Gabe told him that they were out of gluten-free pizza crust, which wasn't in fact true. Then Gabe told more lies. Gabe said that he told me that they were out of gluten-free crust, and my boyfriend answered that I would have canceled the order if I knew that because gluten makes me sick. So Gabe replied that I didn't order a gluten-free pizza. My boyfriend said that he clearly heard that I did. Gabe responded that I agreed to the change from gluten free to regular crust and that people do it all the time, and my boyfriend pointed out that didn't make sense. Gabe's denials and my boyfriend's counter arguments went on for a while and the call ended without resolution. So my boyfriend called back and spoke to someone else who said they did have gluten free dough but only enough for a small pizza. So my boyfriend asked for a small. And went to pick it up under the impression that it would be a substitution for the mistaken order and would not be charged. But no, Gabe was there and continued to argue with him and charged him for the pizza. The whole time my boyfriend was calm and polite. He pointed out that I could have become very sick if I wasn't a regular customer who knew the crust. Gabe seemed only concerned about being right without concern for his customers. It's very disappointing because I have limited restaurant options. I have experienced honest mistakes from servers in other restaurants that resulted in my having stomach cramps and diarrhea for days. I didn't get angry, I didn't write a bad review. I know it's my responsibility to be vigilant about what I eat. I just hope this review helps someone who suffers from food sensitivity and wants a pizza every once and a while. Read moreNot what it used to be years ago. They add an automatic 15% tip if your bill is over $100. Doesn't matter how many people are in your party. Chicken sandwich was so bland I had to drown it in bbq to at least eat half of it. Drinks come in a small plastic cup (only one size available). You could finish the drink in just about 4 drinks because most of its ice. Want a refill? 50 cents! Pizza crust was horrible. Elementary school cafeteria pizza was better than what we got. Want a side of ranch in a small little cup? $1.35! This 15% tip on orders over $100 needs to be checked out by the AGs office. Anywhere you go to feed a family of 4-5 is going to be over $100. So this is nothing but a way for the owners to grab more $$$. The table next to us asked a food runner if they could get a new cup of water because the one they had was cracked and leaking water all over the table. The food runner told him he couldnt and asked the customer to got up to the counter themselves and ask for a new cup of water. Guarantee that party had to also pay the mandatory 15% tip and had to take care of their own broken cup problem. Bathrooms were filthy. This place is barely hanging on to life only because of its name and place in downtown Santa Fe food history. Owners should be ashamed of the quality of food theyre putting out and for what theyre charging for it, plus the tip grabbing. We would have saved a lot of money had we just picked up a few pies and wings from Pizza Hut and a two liter of soda....
Read moreWhile getting some info at the Santa Fe visitor's center, we were told by guide that her favorite place to catch lunch was Upper Crust. She mentioned their lunch special for $8, so we headed there right away!
We ordered at the front and the lady was right, Upper Crust's lunch special was a terrific value: $8 for salad with choice of dressing, a slice of pizza with one topping of choice and a drink. The kids each had slices with Canadian bacon, I had chorizo, and my wife got artichoke.
All were excellent. I appreciated that the salad weren't just some wilted lettuce and old tomato wedges like other places. It was truly fresh like you'd make at home. Take a look at my pics for that.
The pizza slices were very good. One warning: the chili flakes at your table aren't the usual generic pizzeria chili flakes, only a few shakes of these flakes go a long way - you're in New Mexico after all!
The service was very good. The staff are friendly and served everything to our tables quickly. Although they seemed very busy, they bent over backwards to serve.
There's plenty of seating in what I consider one if the most unique and handsomest pizza places I've ever seen. This ain't no ordinary corner pizza place. It definitely captures the southwest vibe. There is also some seating outside.
