Born August 1951 and raised in San Francisco by my Costa Rican / German family of carnivores, I had no idea what pastrami was. Even though my Grandfather was a deli afficionado loving his German blood sausage, Italian Genoa salami and mortadella, he never brought home pastrami. Not until Howard Heshi opened his Kosher Jewish deli on Montgomery Street, the “Wall Street” of San Francisco, did I devour my very 1st “strami”, as Howard monikered it. 400-pound Howard was famous for wearing a Tony Soprano “wife beater” sleeveless t-shirt, and perspired over the scrumptiously steamed pastrami. He would kid the guests that queued-up around the block that his sweat added that little extra salt that was missing! Moving to Los Angeles, Nate ‘n Al’s in Beverly Hills became the new home for my “strami” fix. Surrounded by movie stars and the Hollywood hoi polloi that I purposely ignored, I was in heaven, vacuuming my Kosher delights. Also in Los Angeles, I frequented Fromin’s in Santa Monica, where the “B” level wannabe actors were relegated to. Yet Fromin’s featured the #1 matzo ball soup in all of Lost Angels. Traveling the entire U.S. for 30 years, I was graced with eating several times at my #1 Jewish deli of all time, “Wolfie’s Rascal House” in Miami. Shuttered in 2008, they served better “strami” than Katz’s in NYC, Mill Basin in Brooklyn, Harold’s in Edison, N.J., Wise Bros. in San Francisco and were “even-steven” with The Carnegie Deli that lamentably closed in 2016. But thanks to Alexandra, my Daughter, she discovered that there is a “Wolfie’s Rascal House” in Sarasota! I have been residing in Frankfurt, Germany the last 13 years and have not been able to enjoy the extraordinary home-cooking of a true Jewish Kosher Deli. Bursting with anticipation, Alexandra and I went yesterday, and were enraptured by the authentic and identical to Wolfie's Miami quality. The Sarasota restaurant welcomes you with an amazing array of deli delights that goes on forever. As you enter the elegantly comfortable dining room, the back bar is absolutely spectacular. We each started our lunch with a HUGE bowl of matzo ball soup that is a meal in itself. A baseball sized matzo sits in the middle of a super savory broth, enhanced by tender chicken pieces, thin egg noodles and decorated by al dente carrots and celery. Next at bat were our ’strami sandwiches that were as scrumptious as they were sumptuous. Accompanied by crispy hand-battered onion rings, our lunch was an epicurean feast. In front of the impeccable restrooms are B&W’S of the movie stars that frequented Wolfie’s Miami. My favorite photo was that of Meyer Lansky, the legendary business man that I have always admired. Meyer converted the dump that dictator Fulgencio Batista had made of Havana, into “The Paris of the Caribbean.” Due to Meyer creating world-class casinos, the rich and powerful from all over the world traveled to Cuba en masse. And then pitifully, megalomaniac Fidel Castro converted the wonderful island into a Communistic hell. Owner Jonathan Mitchell, G.M. Dale, and the outrageously affable servers team of Yvette and Sierra “Nevada” Marie deserve our ******* Award for culinary excellence. ENCORE TODAY: May 24, 2024 The hallmark of a superb restaurant is a commitment to excellence in providing delicious food quality and attentive service on a consistent basis. I visited Wolfie's today with Christian, my Son, who loved to eat at the Miami deli when he was a little boy. He was totally overwhelmed by the tremendous authentic quality of his "Jerry's Famous Ruben", and the kindness of Sommer, our server. I erred on my previous description of the matzo ball. As Christian confirmed, it is more the size of a large grapefruit than a baseball, the centerpiece of a meal in itself. Bottom line___________we thoroughly enjoyed the richness of the fresh chicken broth and the colorful variety of the matzo's veggie accompaniments. I heartfeltly recommend Wolfie's to all Central Floridians as an exceptional dining experience! 3RD CURTAIN CALL:TODAY MAY 26

Went to the “So Called” Wolfies / Rascal House Deli in Sarasota and needless to say we will not be going back… Yep, your’s may differ but our culinary experience there was anything but good. So yesterday, with the highest of expectations thinking “Hey We’re Going To Wolfies”, here’s what we experienced… Again your milage may vary, this was just our experience. Our Kinish was deep fried, ok… But never drained, came out swimming in a pool of funny tasting oil that had to be soaked off the plate with one napkin and then wiped down with another, then even after it looked like it was wet, it was so soggy you couldn’t even cut through it with the knife. I ordered my Corned Beef, juicy not too lean and they brought me out a sandwich that was leaner than lean. I took one look at the sandwich and had to chase down the waitress to send it back. The sandwich came back out a few mins later looking like they just stuck a piece or two of fat between the slices to appease me. Sandwich was still dry but ate it anyway. In my opinion, Certainly not a Corned Beef I’m used to being served at a kosher style deli. The pickles on our plates were seriously maybe 2.5” in length(Maybe the size of a thumb),they were cut in 1/2, so basically the 2 of us had (1) very small, very salty pickle to share… You’d think for $17.00 for a 6oz sandwich they could spare a pickle. Note: My Buddy had the $20something Ruben, again his too came with the 1/2 a tiny pickle. To top it off, my sandwich’s rye bread was missing the entire crust on one side of the sandwich. See the pictures I posted… After the waitress sensed our dissatisfaction, they sent the manager to the table where we voiced our dismay, showing him how bad the knish was and he said that’s how they make them. I showed him my sandwich missing the crust off the bread and advised him they have a real quality issue here. My feelings were he looked at us, keep in mind, 2 each with a lifetimes history of eating Deli as if we didn’t know how food like this is supposed to be. What got me was the least thing he could have done was comped us for the Knish, but nope. Totally advised him, based on our experience, especially with the prices they charge (6 oz sandwich $17.00, Bowl of Matza Ball Soup $14.00, $7.00 Kinish), we would not be coming back. I do have to say, the Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda hit the spot(LOL), and the little side of cole slaw that came with my sandwich tasted fine. I seriously doubt some of the folks working there ever tasted real old school kosher style foods. Having grandparents in Miami and Living In NJ I’ve been to the original Wolfies & Rascal House Delis countless times throughout my youth and adulthood, as well as, the numerous Kosher Delis throughout the NJ/NY Metro area and this place by far was our least satisfying.

Three of us came here for lunch mid week. We opted to sit outside which had both covered and uncovered seating. .The inside deli counter and restaurant seating areas were very well organized clean and well kept. The tables were spaced well. The interior is decorated nicely, and paid tribute to some of the celebrities that visited Wolfies in the past. It’s a small bar in the dining room that heats about 8 to 10 people looks like a great place to have lunch. We sat in the uncovered area as it was a nice sunny day Service was attentive but not overbearing during our meal and we never felt rushed. As the restaurant filled up for lunch service slowed down a bit but he was still on the ball. The menu is pretty extensive, and they serve breakfast and lunch and dinner items. I started with a cabbage roll, and it came out within a few minutes. Was well made, and the flavor was very good. Basically like a meatball with rice, wrapped in cabbage leaves and covered with what appeared to be like a marinara type sauce. For lunch, I added for the Matthew Broderick, which is basically a patty melt. My partner had the Rachel which is pastrami with cheese on rye. Our friend had pastrami on rye. All the food came out at the same time after about 10 minutes. I had ordered coleslaw, but they sent mine out with fries and that was quickly rectified. I had ordered my patty melt medium, and it came out actually medium rare. I opted not to send it back. In hindsight, I probably should’ve. That said, it did have a good taste and was a good portion. It just would’ve been better cooked a little bit more. Both of the pastrami sandwiches had a large portion of pastrami as you expect from a deli like this. The pastrami had good flavor and was sliced very thinly, which was kind of nice. Sides of french fries were generous, the coleslaw was good and potato salad was tasty. Overall a good experience and a fun time having lunch with friends. The food and service were good.

Our first visit to The Original Wolfie’s in Sarasota was nothing short of amazing. Right away, we noticed a beautiful menorah displayed in the middle of the bar—it was such a nice and pleasant surprise that added a special touch to the ambiance. The owner personally came to our table to greet us, making us feel incredibly welcomed and valued. He even asked if we needed any help with the menu, which was a lovely gesture. Speaking of the menu, it features an incredible selection of traditional Jewish dishes, including matzo ball soup, latkes, tongue, strudel, challah, noodle kugel, babka, and so much more. Everything we tried was authentic, flavorful, and comforting—a true celebration of tradition and taste. The warm, inviting atmosphere, exceptional service, and delicious food made this a truly memorable experience. We’re already excited to return and explore more of the menu. Highly recommend The Original Wolfie’s to anyone looking for a wonderful dining experience!

3RD CURTAIN CALL TODAY: MAY 26, 2024 1st and foremost, Christine and I had the immense pleasure of meeting Jonathan, Michelle and their lovely family. Rounding out the trio of my visits this week, Christine agreed with my children Christian and Alexandra, that Wolfie's is top-of-the-charts. A born & raised German chef, Christine was in culinary heaven enjoying her matzo ball soup and pastrami sandwich. Wolfie's portion of soup was so generous, that 1/2 will be her evening snack. And my 3rd Manhattan Pastrami sandwich in the last 5 days was as consistently delicious as my 1st. Sneaking into the fridge to just nibble a chunk of cheesecake, it was an ethereal delight. Dining at Wolfie's is an absolute must for all Central Florida foodies that enjoy the absolute best of the best!

Our family stopped by for lunch and the kids enjoyed the food so much, they requested to eat here again the next day (!). The menu consists of a great selection of Jewish dishes. Our favorites are the stuffed cabbage, the pastrami sandwich, potato pancakes, matzo ball soup and blintzes. The kids loved their brisket and chicken schnitzel from the kids menu - one of the best kids selection in Sarasota. My husband and I used lived in NYC for 10+ years and the food is better than in Katz’s Deli so I am suspicious about the integrity of some of the negative reviews here. The cheesecake is to die for and the food is always fresh. The decor is lively. I wish Wolfie’s a great success, they deserve it.
