I was visiting the Phoenix area and my daughter wanted Mexican food. Our home town has incredible Mexican food of all different styles so I was finding "good" Mexican food is not always easy. Let me keep it simple. This IS GOOD Mexican food.
Without getting into what is and is not "authentic" Mexican food, id prefer to get into what was good.
My daughter ordered the shredded beef burrito, my wife ordered the avocado chicken enchilada and I ordered the carnitas.
My daughters burrito was LOADED with shredded beef that was juicy and flavorful. She got the mild sauce, which, for us was less than mild butvstill.good. sheoved her beans and rice which she did not share.
My wife's enchiladas were very good as well. Good portions and lots of flavor, light on the heat.
The carnitas. Wow. Delicious. Theres a place a few blocks from my house that makes carnivals and only carnitas. She is open 2 days a week and when she sells out she's done. Lines form early and she is rarely open past 1000am. Her carrnitas are ridiculous. That being said, these carnitas were Exceptional. Juicy and tender. Seasoned wonderfully. They. Ame with a great helping if stews peppers, onions and tomatoes. .
In addition to the mains the chips and salsa were very good. Everyone like the chips which and the salsa is different from.what we are use to. There was a nice chili flavor in the salsa which was very nice.
Service. We went on Friday afternoon and opted to sit outside. It was busy but not slammed. Our waiter was very attentive. While we were ordering we aksed questions he answered honestly. My daughter asked about two different types of burritos and one of them he got excited as he described it. So, because she is a teen, she went with a different burrito (which was still good). When it came time to order i was about to switch to the burrito he described but I simply said, "I was thinking about the carnitas but..." at which point he said oh get the carnitas you won't be disappointed. I'm glad he recommended that. The food came quickly. Chips and salsa refilled as were drinks. No complaints at all about service.
Atmosphere. The restaurant is in Old Scottsdale which is full.of artsy boutiques and what not. The restaurant itself has a funky divey feel but does not come across as fake or pretentious. Tables were kinof close which is fine. We shared small conversations with neighborin tables. It has a very laid back feel.to it.
Price. For the 3 meals and drinks we paid around. $60. The meals.were definitely satisfying and we took plenty home.
We highly recommend Frank and Lupe's and will go back if given the chance. This seems.to be one of those palaces where you want to try everything and for us, unfortunately, that is unlikely. The food is very flavorful, the service is very good and the...
Read moreI live locally and previously frequented Frank and Lupes because it is a family restaurant. To support their business, I have often Ordered to Go for lunch at my office or have it delivered if I have to work late. I had family in from out of town and Angel was on staff and managing. It was by far the very worst experience I have had in a restaurant ever before. I never leave any negative reviews, but this experience justifies this review. Angel should not be managing the restaurant. I sincerely hope Teddy reads this review. We were told we had "14 minutes" to Order even though we were there well before 9 closing time and pretty much asked to leave. We arrived at 8:15. Angel was extremely rude and completely unconcerned about the experience and the service. The minute we walked in the door, he was upset we even did. We were rushed and Angel was smug in his apologies. He did not care about service and stated the cooks were upset because we had been sat. Angel and the staff were more concerned with closing early than with the reputation of the restaurant, the family, and their service. My God Mother is elderly and on oxygen. They had just arrived and that was the only real time we had to spend together as they were leaving on a flight early the next morning. The food was sloppily presented. I have never seen the poblano enchiladas look like green mush before, but they did this time; a dish I recommended to my God Mother. She was afraid to even eat her dinner because of how angry Angel and the staff were. I even wondered the same and stopped eating my meal. The table next to us approached us prior to their departure and told us they had the same experience and would not be returning. The staff, and in particular, Angel's, attitude was extremely embarrassing. The ladies next to us actually asked "Did you enjoy your "14" minutes?" "We had the same experience and they were just as rude to us." I asked, "So I was not imagining this?" And to that, they said "Oh No, you were not." I previously worked in restaurants for many years. I am kind to servers and I tip well based upon the experience. I am extremely disappointed and I will not be returning there with any family members again nor will I personally return. This is not a place to take your family if you want them to experience the family hospitality Old Town Scottsdale has to offer that other local restaurants and Chef's are happy to share.
Upon return, I threw the to-go boxes away, which were full. If you have family and they have little to share, and insist on taking you out to dinner, take them somewhere where the staff appreciates their kindness and generosity. Time is a blessing. ...
Read moreHORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. A group of 9 of us went there for dinner the other night. Upon arriving they tell us the patio is closed for a private party, which is totally understandable, so we sat inside. I called in advance to try and make a reservation for 10 people, because having worked in the food industry for 10+ years, I understand that a giant group walking in all at once can really throw things off, but they told me they don't take reservations unless its 20+ people... Upon sitting down the waiter asked us what drinks we wanted, we all ordered our drinks, which took way too long to make, the margaritas had almost no alcohol in them, I get margaritas are sweet, but when you can literally taste no alcohol what-so-ever, there is an issue, as well as their Beer-Rita, all you could taste was the beer, which anyone who has had a Beer-Rita knows the tequila is what you should mainly taste, especially if you are paying $10 for it. Once we finally got our drinks, it took me over 10 minutes, and asking 4 times, to get a straw. It took over 30 mins as well to get chips and salsa, which the portions were very small. The food we ordered was actually pretty decent, relatively good portions, and was hot/warm, but when the server came out to hand us our meal, they had no clue which food went to who, which is basic restaurant knowledge when writing down orders. Upon receiving our bill, the waiter told us he could not split the bill more than 4 ways, even though he knew we all came in smaller groups/couples. After he told us he just walked away and let us try and decide how to handle it, we ended up having to write down on the receipt everyones card and what amount to each card number, which took us about 10-15 mins to do. Once we got everything straight and went to pay, the lady at the front said our server couldn't come out and help us because he was "busy", what he was doing was closing up the bar and other parts of the restaurant early, which is fine, but it was obvious he did not want to help us at all. We paid our bill 5 mins before closing, and by time we walked out it was 10:04, while we were walking out, the bald man welcoming and seating people said "Finally!! Sayonara!!" SUPER RUDE!!! The only reason we stayed 4 mins late was because they wouldn't let us split the bill more than 4 ways, which is a total lie, any POS system lets you break down orders and tickets anyway you want. Sadly based on their customer service, I will not only not be returning, be advising people to go just a couple feet down the road to any other...
