I’m sad to write this review. I was new to Capitol Hill from Dallas and I am international student here in the US. Hillside was definitely my fav without any negative things to say until today. I don’t drink alcohol but I visited this place more than twice a week to play pool( one dollar per game).
Because of my low paying job and other financial constraints I wasn’t able to buy the non alcoholic drinks as well considering the fact that I play close to 5 games per day. People who play pool here are gems ❤️. Bartenders are good too. Never asked me to buy anything and they were cool with me just requesting water( using the words please and thanks ). I casually made a joke about keeping my friend’s ( I played pool with her more often and we both know each other well) solid balls on table when the bartender was trying to help us get the stuck cue ball. I don’t know what happened ( maybe the bartender was good friends with my friend) but the bartender yelled that she doesn’t do anything for free (paid one dollar for my game on this day ) and said that I have to buy alcohol. I just smiled, looked around awkwardly, lost the game and left the bar.
I don’t know man, maybe my joke did not land well or the bartender (flower's name) had a bad day. But I was so sad that she always had this thought of me not buying alcohol as a problem. I just hope that she was direct about it and communicated that I had to buy a drink. I followed a general etiquette of paying for the pool table games and being kind to everyone there. I’ll miss the folks who play pool here. Thanks for the good...
Read moreI asked for chips- they were right in front of me and 1 worker brought them to me in such a rude way. Then later apologizing , I really wasn’t understanding what was the deal about asking for chips but the guy made it so awkward. I don’t need to know anyone’s name btw to ask for something I am paying for as long as I’m saying “please and thank you”. Also as I’m walking out this same person yelled at me from the corner saying “I hope you enjoyed your chips” And my thought was …everything good at home buddy? place is not bad but the approach to the customer in such an sarcastic way was just unnecessary and this is the reason why i would recommend people to...
Read moreProbably my favorite place to hang out for a couple of beers in all of Seattle. I live around the corner and the Hillside is the neighborhood's living room. Awesome staff, friendly regulars, fun place to watch the Hawks (the TV situation isn't completely ideal as it's not a sports bar, but the experience is awesome just the same - the place is always packed and somebody always brings in some sort of spread for the crowd to eat). No food except for small pizzas from SODO Pizza (which are actually quite good) but you can bring in food ordered elsewhere. A real sense of community...
