We went to this hotpot place because the ombu hotpot location in salt lake city Chinatown is probably the best hotpot I've had in the United States. Hotpot is my favorite food and I've had it in Asia hundreds of times so I mean it when I say that. Suffice to say this location was not the same at all and we had a terrible experience.
To start out with one of us got food poisoning and they are still slightly sick as I'm writing this with horrid diarrhea. We are fairly sure it was a crab roll he ate but just be careful of all the seafood options here. They did not look or taste fresh at all.
The wait times were horrid, with us having to wait 15+ minutes at one point for one order of meat platter. And it was very consistently long the entire time we were there. Some of the meat I got had very visible and a lot of browning but we were so hungry and it took so long we didn't bother complaining. Luckily I didn't get food poisoning as bad as my friend, but I definitely felt it upset my stomache a bit.
A lot of food you got in the buffet section looked visibly old or literally had ice on it from being frozen.
The only good thing I have to say is the appetizers they had were good. But their list is by far inferior to the other location I've been too and is missing what in my opinion are the best appetizers on the list the other location had. Examples of what's missing include sushi, pork cutlets, and etc.
They also had decent dessert options as well but really this is all the nice things I have to say about it.
As for looks/vibes it seems the place was previously owned by some American/cowboy themed restaurant and it definitely still shows with no real work put into the aesthetic of the dining area to show otherwise. It definitely makes for a very jarring atmosphere.
Now what drove me to write this negative review is after our horrible experience here, we were still nice and would've gone about our days and just forgotten it, and while trying to be nice I still left a small tip out of courtesy. However, the server had the audacity to point out the tip, ask why it was so low, with a visible angry glare. This server also had admitted to us during our stay the wait had been longer than usual at some points because the food had been ready in the back for a while and she hadn't realized, only looking when we reminded her multiple times. I strongly advise...
Read moreI highly recommend that everyone go here! I think I'll be telling everyone about this place forever because I had THE BEST experience at Ombu Hot Pot that I have ever had at any restaurant I have ever been to in my life, it's THAT good! We went here completely on a whim and honestly I am SO glad that we did. It's all you can eat, and not only was all the food absolutely delicious, everything is fresh (and the food is visually so cute by the way), but it was also a wonderful customer service experience, the vibes were immaculate, and the music is so good. Our waitress was so great; She gave us some pointers with the food (such as the meat only takes 30 second to cook fully), she cooked some of the meat for us and made us a special spicy sauce that is her favorite recipe (and is now my favorite recipe, but unfortunately I forgot to ask her how she made it so I hope she's there the next time I go so I can ask). The service there is also stellar - they are very attentive and all very kind, they go around with hot broth to fill your soup up some more so you can cook more things, our waitress told us her favorite soup recommendations (spicy, mushroom, and beef) - I had spicy and it was so good), they got us drink refills, the service was also very fast when we would order another meat. At the end of the meal, our waitress gave my mom and I each a really cute hair clip (mine looked like scissors) and she even put it in our hair for us! Honestly if I could give them more stars I absolutely would. I cannot recommend this place enough. If you're ever looking for somewhere to go, I highly recommend going here! I'll definitely be coming...
Read moreHonestly and sadly unimpressed. My husband and I saw this restaurant on social media and was so excited to try it! The only things that were really good here was the cucumber salad, the fried rice, and mochi ice cream. Everything else was subpar, not absolutely disgusting but just not great. The thing that bothered me the most was the cooking paper cover that was on the BBQ grill at our table. At first I thought it was supposed to be removed but no it wasnt. This paper was removable and replaceable and that's exactly what had to happened after almost every piece of meat that was being cooked, it burned almost instantly and made the food taste like burnt pieces. For $25 a person this place was not worth it. UPDATE The owner replied below and I appreciate that but the response was full of excuses and passive aggressive remarks. We were not instructed that the paper could be removed or even instructed well on how the restaurant worked as this was out first time, the waitress gave us a watered down speedy version on what to do and then pretty much threw an ipad at us to order, we were not even instructed on how to pay our bill, they were not busy there were 3 employees just sitting at a table talking and then another talking at the front by the register. We will not be returning especially after the response from the Owner. We deserve a...
