I have never been to the Oasis Cafe, either the original diner or today's revamped one even though I grew up in Stillwater. My husband and I came for a late breakfast and we both ordered the bacon, egg, cheese and hash brown breakfast sandwich with hash browns side. I love hash browns! At the first bite we both sensed the flavor of the hash browns seemed "off". I would describe it like the oil used to cook them was old/used and even rancid like. I used 2 ketchup packets to cover up the strong unpleasing hash brown flavor and I ate my sandwich but left the side of hash browns. I was also very disappointed the croissant tasted like a store bought roll. Dense, squishy and slightly sweet not light, flakey or buttery at all. What about using a local bakery for your breads? I also didn't like the American cheese on it but I think that's the way it was supposed to come. I had forgotten how plastic American cheese tastes. I think it would have been better with some good ol Wisconsin cheddar from a local creamery. We were both pretty hungry when we arrived so we ate our meals without complaining to the server. After all, we agreed the server doesn't have anything to do with the way the food is made, our service was good. Lastly, the prices are high for the quality and value you get. Our egg sandwiches were $11.95 each and my hot tea bag was $2.95! It is stated on the menu the prices have increased to offset the workers higher health care costs due to Covid-19. What costs? And aren't we all experiencing higher costs? I was willing to accept the high prices if the quality of food warranted it. But I've already told you how I feel about the food. Sounds like the owner is passing the buck to his customers again just like the $.75/customer minimum wage fee he began in 2014. I won't be back! I feel a review here is the best way to let the owner and others know of our poor experience. Based on reading other critical reviews and the owner's response to them, I'm expecting a dismissal and personal...
Read moreI placed my order and asked if they cooked the eggs in butter. The waitress very cheerfully said they cooked everything in clarified butter. I said I'm completely lactose intolerant. We stared at each for a few beats before we had a detailed conversation about how the eggs are cooked. She said the eggs were cooked on a separate griddle and she thought they could clean the griddle before cooking my eggs and that she would check. Time passes... and she brings us our food. So now we didn't have a choice about just leaving to eat somewhere else. Strike one. I asked her if the eggs were cooked with oil, and she said, "Yes, they were only cooked in oil, but you know that once butter is clarified it's totally dairy-free!" Strike two. She later said the chef said lactose-free and she messed up, but I still didn't eat the eggs. I do not trust a kitchen that is operating under the delusion that clarifying their own butter makes it lactose-free, that is not in line with food safety standards.
If they cook everything in butter they should advertise it, that would draw plenty of people in and let people who can't digest dairy like myself know to steer clear.
Edited to respond to the cafe's response: Your time would be better spent updating your website and your menus to accurately reflect the fact that butter is on everything in your kitchen. Crappier restaurants than yours have figured out how to produce one or two menu items that are dairy or gluten-free. You've just decided not to. That's fine, you get to make that decision. Kindly let everyone know so that some of us don't have to waste our...
Read moreThe moment you step into Oasis Cafe, you are welcomed by a warm, nostalgic ambiance that reminds you of simpler times. There's an air of familiarity that surrounds you, reminiscent of gathering around the family table. The staff, primarily locals who have dedicated many years to the cafe, greet you with genuine smiles and the kind of hospitable service that is rarely seen these days.
The menu at Oasis Cafe is a delightful blend of classic diner fare with unique twists. And one such twist is their Mac and Cheese Pancakes. Yes, you read that right. While it might sound like an odd pairing at first, trust me, it's a dish that will surprise and delight you. It has become a family favorite for us and it's a culinary adventure that you should not miss. My only request would be that they start having real maple syrup on the menu. Happy to pay extra, but that corn syrup stuff don't cut it.
The sense of community and family extends beyond just the menu. The owner of the cafe often mingles with guests, making everyone feel at home. Kids, in particular, are in for a treat with spontaneous games of tic-tac-toe. And the stakes? If they lose, they owe their parent a hug! It's these small, heartfelt gestures that turn a meal into a cherished memory.
In conclusion, Oasis Cafe is more than just a place to eat. It's a community institution that brings people together, offering comfort food that warms the soul, served up with a side of friendly conversation and hearty laughter. When in Stillwater, it's an oasis of genuine hospitality and amazing food that should...
