Feller sits in one of the most beautiful spots in the midwest... It's that place right at the bottom of 95 on the south side of town. It's gorgeous. Wonderful view here, it's great for people watching. There's the caves behind the restaurant being used for, likely nothing... And now that the lift bridge is closed, far fewer jerkoffs on motorcycles or loud cars screaming by shouting how small their manhood is.
Too bad the location is cursed. It seems like every time we hit town there's a new restaurant here (Luna Rosa seemed to hold on for longer than most). I'm sure rent is super high, which makes prices high, which makes expectations very high.
Unfortunately, Feller did not meet those expectations. Service was slow when we visited, despite having multiple servers and few customers on an early Monday evening. We were about to do a cash drop after the appetizer because it was so long before the wait staff returned to see if we were ready to continue our meal. Our drinks were gone, our water reserves were just melting ice, and our plates were clean for about 15 minutes.
We ordered three dishes. The walleye fritters, venison bolognese, and a burger (I roll the dice on obscenely expensive steaks from a restaurant that hasn't proved its lesser dishes are worth the price, it has never worked out for me). The walleye fritters were really good. We loved them and not because they "weren't fishy". They tasted like walleye. I would order again.
My wife said she really liked the bolognese... but she rarely will admit to not liking food, so the real test is whether she eats the leftovers the next day. Which we ended up throwing out. For my part, there was nothing special about the bolognese. She must have eaten the venison when they put the dish down because I didn't see any on the dish. And the sauce could have come from any jar at the store.
The burger was completely overcooked, and I rarely let that slide but for the slowness of service, but even for a well done burger it was utterly indistinguishable from most fast food. It's my fault for not asking them to hold the "cheese" (American is not cheese), because that garbage completely overpowers everything. But the burger is how you can tell if they'll do a steak right. I judge this to be a fail.
I'd not return to Feller, nor would I recommend it (I have had the opportunity to do so and passed). But it might be your thing and I may have been there...
Read moreFantastic, inventive menu, executed to perfection. We were excited to try this place and even more pleased when our experience surpassed our expectations. The smoked trout appetizers were divine. I could have eaten a whole plate of them, but thankfully, I wasn’t given the option, because the lunch entrees we’d chosen were equally well done. Fresh, interesting choices on the menu with carefully thought out details. Desserts were a beautifully executed finish. The staff were all very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Cannot wait to go back and try more of the items on the menu (brunch and dinner options looked delicious as well). The price is very reasonable (actually seemed a bit low for the quality and quantity of food on offer, and I’d be comfortable with paying more here). Not sure why people are saying it’s overpriced- our perfectly flavored meal with fresh ingredients was half of what it would have cost at Dock Cafe down the streeet, and this didn’t taste as though it was all pre-made (open kitchen, so you can watch Chef at work), nor did it come with the Dock’s gratis side of E. coli. Feller is chef-driven, interesting food at a great price. Their brunch prices are actually cheaper than some of the local bfst spots, so the “high priced” comments are way off based. Flavors on everything we had were spot on. The decor is stunning. Our food arrived lightning quick too. Well done, Feller. We’ll be back soon, and often. You can’t go wrong with a meal here or drinks in the jewel...
Read moreWe had a reservation for my birthday on a Sunday at 5pm. We showed up and there wasn’t a hostess or anyone to be seen. Waited for a few minutes until the bartender actually came out to sit us; she didn’t ask about our reservation but there was only one other table seated who was almost done when we got there. The place was dead. Our server came to bring us water and we ordered wine. When we got the menu we noticed several of the dishes they had on their website were not on the printed menu (elk rack, stuffed pheasant, shrimp Nero, country fried duck). These dishes were the reason we chose to go there in the first place so that was disappointing.
We ordered our entrees and the waiting game begun. Another table of 5 arrived and after waiting a while for someone to help them they walked away. One of the hostesses noticed this and started gossiping with a coworker about it. In the meantime our entrees were ready and nobody would grab them from the heat lamp they were sitting under. If this was a busy day for them I could understand but the place was completely dead. When our waitress appeared, she also stopped by to gossip with the hostesses while our food remained under the heat lamp. Finally we decided it was enough, left a 20 to cover our wine and walked away. Thankfully another restaurant down the road saved my birthday dinner fiasco. 10/10 would not recommend due to the...
