We were here for only one night. The location is great---right on Main Street a block from the river and famous lift bridge. It's a pricey boutique hotel in an historical building that has been refurbished in a contemporary mode. Many good restaurants and shops are less than a 5 minute walk away. The best part of our stay was the restaurant (Feller). Very creative food done very well, and they have a lovely patio for dining. If not for the restaurant, my rating of this hotel would be lower. I have made about 400 Tripadvisor reviews, so have a lot of experience with different types of lodgings.||Our king room on the 4th floor was fine---nothing that special, but comfortable with a sofa in front of the TV. The view was ugly, however. The best part of the room was the huge bathroom with a nice walk-in shower. Overall, I would say that the room and other qualities of the hotel did not justify such a high price in this small town. The restaurant doesn't serve breakfast, but there is a little coffee shop attached to the building where you can get pastries, oatmeal, etc. Unfortunately, the morning we ate there the proprietor was having some equipment issues, and our breakfast was not good.||Our biggest issue here was related to the parking situation. There was only one person at the desk when we checked in around 5PM (and perhaps the only worker at the hotel at that time). There is a $30 valet charge for parking (high for Stillwater?). But the regular valet was off this night, so she volunteered to park our car on the restaurant lot up a hill behind the hotel. She gave me another option of parking a half block away at a city lot with a very low overnight rate. I took that option, but when I got to this lot, there didn't seem to be any way to pay, and luckily some workers saw me, and explained that the lot was being re-striped early the next morning. It took me 10 minutes to find out that I shouldn't be parking there tonight. So I drove the car directly to the hotel lot, so the desk clerk wouldn't have to do it. All of this was a 15 minute hassle, part of which my wife was waiting in the lobby. I had no issues with the desk clerk---she was very nice. But the next morning I dealt with a different person who appeared to be a manager. I told her about the parking hassle. Before I even could finish the story, she got very defensive and argumentative (which got me hot), but she finally agreed to waive the valet fee. There was another young lady at the desk that morning, and she did agree that I should have been able to at least finish the story. To clarify, the hotel staff was fine except for this one individual.||The above was a lengthy comment, but it needs to be said given other reviews critical of the hotel staff or management. Overall, good room and great dinner. But the hotel offerings and service do not seem to justify the high price of staying here, and at least one staff member should be counselled to not be so argumentative with customers. The parking issue may have been an unusual situation this particular day, but could have been better handled by the morning manager. I'm not sure why they don't allow self-parking, but perhaps an...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary, and we enjoyed every minute. It's a bit pricey for the Stillwater area and valet parking (which is practically required, given the parking situation in downtown Stillwater) is $30 per night. That said, everything was excellent. The staff were warm and inviting, and when they found out it was our anniversary, they sent a complimentary bottle of wine up to our room with a nice card.
They have done a lovely job renovating the series of old buildings that make up the hotel. The juxtaposition of old and modern is tastefully done, though there are spots where you can definitely smell the damp caves that extend into the cliffs behind the hotel. The room was spotless, the bed was comfortable and beautifully dressed, and the bathroom was spacious with a fantastic waterfall shower (and enough water pressure to actually rinse out my hair.
After check-in, we hit the patio at Feller downstairs for a glass of wine and a late lunch - the food was fantastic and our waitress was a hoot. The homemade sauces (including a zippy mustard) and local cheese and bread make everything top notch. It is a perfect spot to sit with a cocktail and a snack while watching the world go by (albeit a little loud with frequent motorcycles roaring their way out of town). We had the benefit of perfect weather, to boot.
We also had breakfast at Feller the next morning - outstanding. Old fashioned crispy flapjacks, thick-cut bacon, perfect over-easy eggs, and a Croque Madame with a Mornay sauce worthy of a Paris sidwalk cafe - all at a remarkably reasonable price. Aromatic French Press coffee from the coffee shop next door was the bow on top of a perfect way to start the day.
Highly recommended for a comfortable, romantic stay in Stillwater - we will...
Read moreLots of Noise....haunted? We give our experience at the Lora three stars. My husband and I stayed overnight in April hoping for a quite evening and restful night away from the kids. The rooms are beautiful and cozy, the bathroom lovely and the staff professional. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the restaurant down stairs and the food and service were wonderful! How ever we did not get the restful night we hoped for. We were in room 305 (I believe ) which is next to an air handler. Through the night it turned on and off causing some noise. We were also awakened by the drunks on the street below who were out till 12-1 am, the sound proofing from out side noise is an area for improvement. And finally I heard foot steps in our room all through the night. After hearing the noise the first time I told myself I was crazy and to go back to sleep, but it kept going. At one point my husband got up to use the bathroom and I listed to the sound of his steps on the carpet and they sounded the same as the noise I heard earlier. After he got back from the bathroom there was silence and then the foot steps noise on the carpet continued and was on and off through the night. And to top it off, there was a loud banging coming from the ceiling in our room throughout the night, it sounded like some one was taking a metal poll and smashing it against a metal rafter. Part of me would love to go back to Lora to enjoy the wonderful parts, if we do we will not be staying...
