so a group of my friends and i wanted to check someplace out to get brunch for my birthday, and after looking for inexpensive options that weren't fast food, i suggested that our group visited chubb's. google maps still shows chubb's as ray ray's at the mayflower when you look at the establishment on street view, but it has since been renamed to chubbs. we were a little confused because of this and i even almost thought the establishments were two different places - but they're not.
i called in ahead of time to ask if they had space for 8 of us to sit in, and the person who responded over the phone - teri - was very kind.
for a party of our size, the food was inexpensive - usually, whenever i foot the bill when we eat out in a non-fastfood place, i expect food to cost $200-300. but the food cost here was inexpensive, delicious, and filling - i only spent a little over a hundred twenty dollars. the item names were also hilarious, my friends were cracking up over ordering a quickie (lol).
i would say that we were a little disappointed to find that there were not many filipino delicacies like ray ray's had since the only thing on the menu that was vaguely filipino was lechon, but it was alright for us because we were just looking for a place to eat. if you want to go somewhere for filipino food in VB, i recommend going to felynn's, lumpia & co., or susan's kitchenette instead (and that's coming from a filipino person).
now that being said, the true highlight of our visit was the SERVICE. without staff's help our brunch visit here would have been a complete pain. we sat out front. when i went inside to pay my group's bill (using apple pay, because I didn't have my card on me), an older man came to my group to strike conversation. he seemed drunk, was making them uncomfortable, and because we're literally teenagers we just kind of stood there and tried to make do with what we could and expected this adult man to go away. when i got back to my group, he had already been with them for several minutes and was starting to get aggressive with one of my friends. i ushered two of my other friends, who were not interacting with him, to come ask for help. we got teri to come deal with him, but the situation escalated when we all went into the women's restroom and this man was trying to come in. he heard us talking about him while one of my friends was trying to use the toilet. luckily enough, teri came over and we heard her deescalate the situation outside the restroom. she was so stern and got him to leave the establishment and stop harassing us. yall better give that lady a RAISE. 😭😭 she even let us stay after closing to finish up our food after that fiasco.
we'll definitely revisit in the future to get a better experience...
Read moreTo be honest, I teetered between giving a three and four star rating. It's obviously a great locally owned spot as there was a wait to be seated and the flow of people didn't slow down the whole time we were there.
The menu is so unique that I continue to go back and try more dishes. You'll find they have your general diner type food but there's also quite a bit of Filipino style food options, that is inspired by Rays heritage. For example the menu offers some unique options like Ube pancakes, Longanisa (Filipino sausage which is typically made as a fatter link) sausage patties, and Ube Spam sliders.
I had tried the ube pancakes before and you'll find them to be sweet as they're made with condensed milk. The flavor is so unique it's definitely a must-try. This time around I got the pancit topped with fried chicken thigh. I'm typically weary of ordering pancit because I find restaurants go a little heavy on the soy sauce and/or salt, but I was intrigued by the fried chicken thigh (as I do love a great fried chicken thigh). I'm happy to state the pancit was not salty but it does have a heavier citrus taste (couldn't tell if it was kalamansi or lemon). The fried chicken wasn't what I envisioned as a crispy fried chicken thigh sitting atop the pancit - it was actually precut chicken thigh pieces with no skin.
I also added the lumpia to my order, as you can add 2 to your entree. I'm guessing they change the recipe as I asked what type of meat they used in theirs and the server had to ask. When she came back she said "today we are serving beef". And I will say they were DELICIOUS! Fried just right to give it that perfect crispiness with the seasoned beef it encased. They were so good I ordered more and found I got their last two!
Bathroom: So their bathroom is outside in the public club type area of the apartment/condo building. I chose not to go as my party-mate said there was no soap so that was a...
Read moreLast day in Virginia Beach and needed a breakfast place and my Google search led me to Ray Rays and I couldn’t be more pleased. There was no wait because we got there 30 min early cause I forgot to look at the time it opened. We were greeted by Cammie (like in Street Fighter 😊) she sat us and took care of us. She provided us with recommendations and laughter.
We really wanted lumpia but they were out BECAUSE it is made fresh so I know it would have been SO GOOD!!!
I ordered the Ube sliders and the Phak Attack with a side of Ube Waffles (Cammie recommended all)
The Ube sliders were AMAZING!!! I was skeptical because I’ve never had Ube but OMG. So they come out 3 very large sliders and your are thinking omg so much bread but let me tell you…it literally melts in your mouth it’s not starchy and has a subtle taste that I can’t really pinpoint but it’s not as sweet as an Hawaiian sweet roll but better than potato bread. The spam is fried crispy with egg and melted cheese every bite was savory. Do not miss out on ordering these and you could definitely share.
The Phak Attack was extremely flavor with the crispy hashbrowns under the scramble you should definitely add the Ray Rays citrus hot sauce to the dish.
Lastly was the Ube waffle with Nutella and strawberries. Y’all….it was so good. You do not need to add anything to this waffle. The waffle is perfectly made and the Nutella is a perfect addition.
If you are in the area you need to hit them up and they serve breakfast all day me personally it’s my favorite meal of the day!!
Lastly the atmosphere pays respect to Hawaii of course which are totally present in the menu. I really wanted to try the loco moco but I feel the choices we made...
