We were originally headed to one of the popular breakfast spots on Atlantic, but after reading some mixed reviews and seeing a ridiculous surcharge for egg dishes was still in effect, we decided to skip the tourist trap and turned to Google Maps for advice. Doc Taylor's kept popping up with great reviews--and since we have a soft spot for biscuits and gravy--we hopped in the car and made our way over.

Finding the place was a little tricky. When our GPS said we had arrived, there wasn't much signage to reassure us we were in the right spot. Kinda one of those "if you know, you know" kinda joints. The only real clue was the parking signs for their small attached lot. Once we parked, we weren't totally sure where to enter, but walking through the alley led us to the front of a small white house. Seeing people dining on the enclosed porch was the confirmation we needed!

Once inside, the hostess was super friendly and sat us right away. Heidi, our waitress, was amazing--warm, welcoming, and very helpful with first-timer suggestions. We started with a screwdriver and a greyhound while deciding on food, which was the perfect kick-off.

I love a good eggs benedict but more often than not, the eggs are overcooked and the dish misses the mark because of it. Heidi assured me the cook knew how to properly poach an egg, so I trusted her and ordered the Eggs Benedict. She wasn't wrong--the eggs were spot on, the hollandaise was deliciously homemade, and the dish came together perfectly. The hashbrowns could've used a little more flavor, but a sprinkle of salt/pepper and some hot sauce did the trick.

He ordered the biscuits and gravy and they were also incredibly well done.

And the price....WOW! We would have paid double at the tourist trap, and not had this great of an experience.

Overall, we loved starting our morning at Doc's and will definitely make it our go-to breakfast spot the next time we're in Virginia Beach. Hopefully the owner sees this review and gives Heidi and the kitchen team some much-deserved...

Stopped in here based on the recommendation of Randy, our Front Desk Attendant at Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South. (read my review on that establishment as well).

If you like NEW AND FANCY...well, don't come here. If you like spotless interior, well...yeah, no, this isn't it either. If you like GOOD food and GOOD service, then you might want to wander in and take a look over the menu.

Old house converted to a restaurant...certainly has a 'local flavor' to it, as we got there around 1345 or so, and the place was packed. Breakfast/brunch joint, so don't expect dinner there. The floors creak when you walk, and it may seem 'cramped' to some. Trust me though, it's worth it to enjoy the food they provide.

We sat at a table, not at the bar, but could see the folks at the bar being entertained by the cooks, so they had fun. Pretty neat stuff actually.

I had 2 biscuits with regular sausage gravy and hash browns. My girlfriend had the steak and cheese sub with fries. There were at least three, but maybe four options for gravy...I picked one that I preferred.

Biscuits and gravy were both hand made from scratch, not something you'd get out of a popping can or gravy mix pouch. Biscuits were VERY tasty and the gravy had a good portion of sausage in it. The hash browns where cooked to a golden crispy delight, and paired well with the gravy.

Surprisingly, so did my girlfriends french fries, which were also golden crispy and done right. Her sub was tasty and was on-par with any sub of the same type I've had from any other restaurant.

Friendly atmosphere and good service. When we're in town again, we will certainly stop in for more options...

I was waiting at the door when they opened up. I had been looking forward to eating here for the last couple days so when Wednesday rolled around and they were open again, I was ready to have some of their fabulous tasting food I had heard about. They definitely didn't disappoint.

When your outside, you have no idea what you're in for when you step inside. From outside it looks like a regular family home but inside there is a ton of seating and a great counter which I proceeded to take up the first space at.

Now I love creme chipped beef and I hardly ever see it on a menu so I happily gave it a try. I sat at the counter where I was able to watch the guys cooking and I saw my creme chipped beef go from basics to plate right in front of me.

It was fabulous. These guys knowhow to get the flavor out of their food and the CCB was rich and creamy. I had plenty of gravy left to order a side of hash browns and smother them with CCB and enjoy that as well.

On the sweet side, I ordered sweet potato, pecan pancakes. I never order flavored pancakes but I had confidence in these guys and I wasn't disappointed. The cakes were fabulous. I will say that if you had told me they were pumpkin and pecan that I wouldn't have been able to tell. All I know is that they were awesome.

My only regret was that I was I in town for only one breakfast so I'll have to come back some day to try the biscuits and gravy.

The staff was great and my waitress was very cool and, probably shouldn't say it in this day and age, gorgeous.

Anyway. Two...

We had a lovely time. The place is very popular and most certainly you will have to make a line unless you 7 AM which is when they open. We arrived around 10 AM and had a one hour wait. In the meantime, they have a next door sort of pub, where are you? Can I have several drinks as you wait. We were called in less than an hour and seated in the main dining room. Sometimes, you can be lucky and find a seat at the counter without much waiting time, but if the counter is busy, you will have to be on the lookout, and pounce the next available seating when somebody leaves. Once we were seated at our table, we had a lovely waitress name, Noelle. The menu at this breakfast place is quite funny. You have a different breakfast plates named after illnesses, which makes it pretty entertaining to read the entire menu before you decide what to eat. They are very accommodating and you can make changes to you order. It has a very friendly atmosphere, and is definitely family and children friendly as well. They only open until 2 PM so make sure you get in before this time. Breakfast is really good, coffee is really good as well. You will definitely enjoy your time at this breakfast nook in Virginia Beach. also wanted to mention that there is free parking behind the building. Not many people know this and say it’s hard to find parking. The really know how to take care of their patrons.

After relocating to Virginia Beach, we walked past Doc Taylor's one morning to scope out the menu & were immediately persuaded by patrons on their outdoor patio to patronize the restaurant. They were adamant that Doc Taylor's is 'the' best breakfast/brunch restaurant on the Oceanfront ... & I concur ... truly a hidden gem. From 'The Doctor's World Famous' Bloody Mary's & seasonal Mimosas to the grilled parmesan tomatoes ... Doc Taylor's never disappoints. The historic layout & friendly staff provide an inviting & comfortable ambiance, making this an ideal venue for families (w/ small children) &/or large groups. Their menu offers both breakfast & lunch options at a value the overpriced 'pancake houses' cannot compete w/. Rony Castillo, Doc Taylor's resident Bar Slave has perfected the Bloody Mary &, at $2.50, it's the best bargain on the beach. Living directly next door to Pocahontas Pancake House on 35th & Atlantic, we religiously forego our resident, 10% discount, & instead walk the 11 blocks to Doc Taylor's on 23rd.

Doc Taylors Restaurant was a joy to go to. My sister-in-law was in town so my husband and I, along with our grown children and spouse took her to Doc Taylors for brunch. It was 11:30am on a Monday, we all ordered Mimosas or Screwdrivers and enjoyed the breakfasts they offer. Most of us had something different and we all really enjoyed our meal. Not one complaint from anyone and there was 7 of us. The real gem in this restaurant is the employees! The food can be fanominal but if the staff isn't then it ruins the whole experience. From the start the staff welcomed us and made us feel at home. They have us a little spot in the back where we could enjoy each other but not distribute others. It was private and every employee was great to talk to and completely professional. They didn't wait until your table was filled with dirty plates to remove them. A few different people checked out table and took the plates as people were done with them. It was really a nice touch not to be visiting over a pile of dirty dishes.
