I was looking forward to dining here at Cabra, but unfortunately had a very disappointing experience with our server, Nikki. Never have I encountered so many issues with inattentiveness from a restaurant. First off, I tried to contact the restaurant to let them know I would be running 15-20 minutes late due to high traffic even though we were expected to arrive on time and we were left with NO RESPONSE. Tried to call them 10 times, texted them through OpenTable, and they never gave us the opportunity to let them know we were going to miss our reserved time slot. When I had arrived, the hosts greeted me with “you missed your reservation, we don’t use phones here” and were left waiting far longer than expected for table. What restaurant doesn’t “use phones” and how are guests supposed to let the restaurant know that they’re still on their way but arriving later due to unforeseen circumstances?! Once we were seated, we had to ask other people that we’re ready to order after reading through the menu for 20 minutes — that’s when Nikki finally greeted us. After placing our drink & food orders, Nikki never brought out our drinks even after we reminded her in the MIDDLE of our dinner. Throughout our meal, it felt as though she prioritized other tables over ours, leading to further delays and a lack of basic service. When we finished eating, dirty plates remained on our table for a significant amount of time, and it took another 30 minutes until I got fed up and got up from my table to request a different server to finally receive our check and to CANCEL our drinks that NEVER came. Nikki failed to even apologize for the service lapses or for never giving us our drinks, which compounded the frustration of our entire dining experience here. I completely understand if it was busy, but NOT ONCE DID SHE CHECK UP ON US OR LET US KNOW ABOUT ANY DELAYS while we watched her tend to EVERY other table around us. Overall, the service was notably subpar, and I hope this feedback helps improve future customer interactions and to put some sense into an “upscale” restaurant for hiring...

Read moreI can not rave enough about this place. The great experience started upon arrival where a young female dj was playing fantastic music….. At a pleasant volume. The entire space is beautifully decorated and the outdoor patio was delightful on a chilly afternoon. The view from our table of the high rises in the loop was perfection. There was also a fireplace which at the time wasn’t on but we will be back when the weather is cooler.
We started out with cocktails from a talented bar tender. We ordered several “last words” that had the perfect balance of tartness, herbiness and a tiny bit of sweetness.
Then we ordered chicken thigh anticucho which was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. I know, the humble chicken thigh, but the char was just right and the marinade and sauces balanced the char to create perfection. The vegetable dish solterito is something I will try to duplicate at home. It was a larger vegetable dish which is often difficult to find on restaurant menus. The veggies were crisp tender, varied in texture and amazingly dressed in a tart dressing that might have a little toasted sesame oil. Those two dishes would be a perfect dinner but we had others. We also had mushroom ceviche (!!!!!!), tuna tataki, and yucca frites. I added the frites in case the portions were too small and we were still hungry. They were perfectly fine but not as interesting as the other items and we actually could only eat one so we boxed them up to go.
I can not imagine any future trip to Chicago without at least one meal at Cabra. The outdoor dining, the food, the decor, the music all create the perfect restaurant...
