My visit to Bale Well Restaurant in Hoi An left much to be desired. Despite high hopes fueled by rave reviews, my experience was nothing short of disappointing. Shortly after placing my order, I was greeted with mountains of food—but all of it precooked, cold, and dripping with grease. The Bánh xèo, the highlight I was looking forward to, was an underwhelming letdown. Each serving contained a single, tiny shrimp (if you were lucky) and barely any other filling safe for a few limp bean sprouts☹️ The spring rolls were bland and almost tasteless, while the BBQ pork strips arrived cold and uninspiring.

The service was equally disheartening. The food was brought out almost immediately, suggesting it had been prepared hours earlier. The vegetables were soggy and lacked any flavor, and the meat had clearly been sitting around for quite some time. This was by far the worst meal I had in Vietnam.

Furthermore, the lack of choice and the hurried service compounded the poor dining experience. I couldn't fathom why anyone would rate this place highly. The experience was so underwhelming that I couldn't even stay for the dessert included in the set menu.

Overall, Bale Well Restaurant is overrated, and I wouldn't recommend wasting your time or money here. There are plenty of other tastier, friendlier, and more reasonable places to...

You’ll smell it before you see it. That’s how you know you’ve found Bale Well, a tiny open-air restaurant in one of Hoi An’s back alleys.

As arguably the most touristy town in Vietnam, Hoi An has a lot of fantastic restaurants, catering to visitors seeking air conditioned fine dining. I appreciate a gourmet meal as much as the next person, but my search for Bale Well was because I wanted something a little less polished.

It’s admittedly not a secret place. Yes, Bale Well does appear in the guidebooks and Google searches, but it’s also just slightly off the main tourist streets of Hoi An’s old city — hidden enough to attract locals and tourists in the know.

My travel mate and I ordered up the only dish we could: barbecued pork, cooked on a smoking outdoor grill a few feet away (and the source of the delicious aroma that had guided us). There’s no real menu at Bale Well, just a set offering of fixings to make the tastiest rolls I’ve ever experienced. Ask for the set dish and you’ll get a buffet of pork, rice paper wrappers, rice pancakes (called bánh xèo, and considered to be one of the iconic Hoi An street foods), a basket of fresh herbs (coriander, mint, Asian basil), and...

A local guide’s recommendation! Heard over the years it went from being a total local place to a more mixed of tourist and local place due to the widespread good word of it. Ordering is simple, just a set meal for each person. The portions were generous, and the staff will teach you how to roll and make the wraps yourself. The set meal includes a delightful array of fresh greens, rice paper, grilled pork skewers, crispy spring rolls, and savory pancakes. Each bite is a burst of flavors, and the experience of assembling your own wraps adds a fun, interactive element to the meal. The atmosphere is casual and vibrant, reflecting the authentic Vietnamese dining experience. Despite its growing popularity among tourists, Bale Well has managed to retain its local charm . Whether you're a foodie looking to try something new or just someone who enjoys good food in a lively setting, Bale Well is a must-visit. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culinary culture and enjoy a meal that’s both delicious and memorable.
