A Complete Disappointment – Not Worth Your Time or Money

I took my family to this restaurant with high hopes, but it turned out to be a total letdown. We arrived at 7:30 PM, and the place was completely empty – which in hindsight should have been our first red flag.

The menu sounded promising, but I was surprised to see more meat options than seafood, which was unexpected given the restaurant’s location and theme. Another warning sign. And let's talk about the prices – completely sky-high! I mean, sure, you're paying for air conditioning, but 50,000 VND for a bottle of Larue beer? Really?

Then came the food. I ordered the pork and shrimp cha gio (spring rolls) to compare with my own. What a disappointment – two single rolls on a plate for 90,000 VND. Yes, you read that right! I also ordered a pork and rice main dish, and that was the real disaster. The pork chop was dry and flavorless, the rice was cold, and the portion of morning glory was soggy and lukewarm at best. All of this for 320,000 VND.

To be clear, I don't mind spending money on good food. But for the price, I expect quality – food that is prepared and served properly. Especially when the restaurant is run by Chef Duc, who claims to be "in control." Well, I can tell you right now, Chef Duc is not in control.

Bottom line: this place is nothing more than a tourist trap. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Mai Fish Restaurant in Hoi An is an absolute must-visit! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by the warm and inviting atmosphere, but the real star of the show is the incredible owner and chef, Duc.

Duc’s passion for authentic Vietnamese cuisine is evident in every dish he serves, especially his pho—without a doubt the best I've had in Vietnam! The broth is rich and flavorful, made with all-natural ingredients and no MSG, which really allows the fresh flavors to shine. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the herbs added that authentic touch that truly elevates the dish.

Duc takes great pride in using high-quality, natural ingredients, and it shows. He’s always eager to share stories about his cooking philosophy and the importance of freshness in his dishes. His enthusiasm and dedication to his craft make every visit feel special.

The ambiance is cozy and charming, creating the perfect backdrop for a delicious meal. If you're in Hoi An, don’t miss the chance to dine at Mai Fish Restaurant! I can’t wait to come back for more of Duc's fantastic pho and delightful hospitality. Thank you for an amazing...

This place didn’t quite live up to expectations considering the price. The half price happy hour cocktails were good, starters of wonton and Banh Mi delicious but what I was really excited about was the duck leg curry because it has 2 ingredients I love; duck and sweet potato. The flavours were great, as was the presentation but it was normal potato in the curry, not sweet potato and when I pointed this out, there was a great deal of confusion and discussing. The manager suggested we return the next day for a free dessert but we can’t afford to come twice in one week. I normally wouldn’t make a fuss but considering they charge £11 for the dish, I was expecting perfection and I really don’t rate a restaurant that can’t tell the difference between normal potato and sweet potato. Sorry Mai Fish but I won’t be back, even if you do offer us a free dessert.

The service was a bit amateur and confused too. We arrived an hour in advance to enjoy the cocktails and when we asked to be shown to our table they told us there would be a bit of a wait. The restaurant was empty! Bizarre. We’d booked the table 5...

Ordered fish and wine (having wine on the menu was personally great after 2,5 weeks of only beer and rice wine on the menu for me. I have been mainly seeking local food. Paid 750 000 vnd for fish and two glasses of wine which felt like a splurge after eating under 200 000VND a meal … fish was good, not mind blowing. I enjoyed onion pickles and pineapple salsa though Service - non existent ie they take order, bring food, take cash. Street vendors walk in freely - which is annoying when you want to have your peach and quiet and staff did not ask them out. What’s not okay is the hidden taxes - they come on the bill as a surprise. I only saw this tax being added in hotels in Sapa which is more understandable. This tax charge is unusual to my personal experience

We ordered the set menu and it was absolutely amazing. Perfect rolls with sour fish sauce, delicious duck curry, decent red snapper (it was a bit lack of salt), well cooked fried Kang Kong and pumpkin soup. I didn't like the dessert (panna cotta) as it tastes kinda weird but the way they made it was creative. We changed to the flambe mango and it tastes quite lovely. In general, I enjoyed the experience at Mai Fish restaurant. It's located in a very easy-to-find location, near entrance of the ancient town. It has a pretty unique way of antiq decoration and on-point music. The staff here were very nice and helpful. The price is definitely not cheap - it's actually more towards high end price compared to other restaurants.

We thought the 3-course lunch set was a great deal, and happily sat under the fans with a view of the river, sipping local beer and cocktails (both half off during happy hour... which I think is from 10-6?). Our starters were nice and light—white rose dumplings and vegetarian rolls with peanut sauce. For our main course I had a delicious rice platter with pork and all kinds of veggie fixings, and my boyfriend had rings of squid with sweet & sour sauce (not my cup of tea but he said it was prepared well). Dessert was amazing—passion fruit creme brûlée served in hollowed-out passion fruits. Would definitely recommend to a hungry or thirsty traveler looking for a break in ancient town.
