Giò chả Minh Châu — Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

Purchased in-store 2 bánh giò, 2 bánh ít, 100gr chả chiên (pre-fried Viet ham) with a request that the ham to be cut into pieces, and 4 bánh đậu xanh. I was told the total order is 76,000VND. I was then asked to reconfirm that the ham will be cut into pieces.

Things couldn’t get more frustrating when I got home and found out the ham wasn’t there. I called the store with the assumption that the ham was covered in the paid 76,000VND. The lady that got my call calculated the math again and told me that 76,000VND didn’t cover the ham, so there shouldn’t be any complaints; then abruptly hung up on me without any apologies. Now I wouldn’t mind paying for the ham if the order was correct. The store wasn’t even crowded to give some sympathy and excuse for effing up an order.

Lesson learnt: Don’t entertain service here by eating at somewhere else. If you do, please double check your order carefully before you leave the store, because the staff here apparently cannot get the order right.

My family used to buy Vietnamese pork sausage (giò chả) from this place regularly, but unfortunately, the quality has changed drastically over the years. We recently bought a roll of chả lụa, and it tasted nothing like what we remembered. It was more like a lump of flour and borax - completely lacking the natural sweetness and aroma of pork. Additionally, it was too salty. The texture was unnaturally firm, likely from an overuse of preservatives.

A good chả lụa should have a light pink hue, a surface dotted with small air holes from being hand-pounded, a fragrant smell from the meat and spices, and a chewy, springy texture - not overly soft or mushy. Sadly, this one had none of...
