Ashkenazi Synagogue (Sarajevo Synagogue) — Attraction in City of Sarajevo

The Aškenazi Synagogue was built in 1902 for Sarajevo’s Jews, who began to arrive in greater numbers once BiH was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The temple is located on the left bank of the Miljacka River, between Drvenija and Ćumurija Bridges, and was designed by the famous architect, Karl Paržik. This was the first religious object to be built in Sarajevo in the Pseudo-Moorish style.

It is believed that Paržik’s designs for this Sarajevo synagogue (at that time, the third largest temple in Europe) were based on the synagogue in Budapest. Construction was entrusted to Ludwig Jungwirth and the work and painting done on the interior was carried out by master painter, Ludwig Oisner.

Die Synagoge find ich schon schön, nur ist sie nicht annähernd so ästhetisch wie manch andere, wie zum Beispiel in Budapest oder in Prag. Ich fand den Preis unverschämt, dafür dass eine Frau mir ein paar Dinge versucht hat zu erklären auf Englisch. Ich muss gestehen dass ich ihr nicht zugehört habe weil sie komplett teilnahmslos wirkte und ihr Englisch war auch nicht wirklich gut. Sprich auf den Vortrag hätte ich verzichten können. Von mir gibt es keine Empfehlung für diese Synagoge. Ich hätte lieber die Wahl gehabt ob ich eine Führung möchte oder nicht. Auch finde ich es seltsam dass ma fotografieren aber nicht filmen darf. Was soll das bitte für einen Hintergrund haben? Man soll sich doch lieber ein Beispiel nehmen an der Synagoge in Rom oder der Dohany Synagoge in Budapest oder dem jüdischen Museum in Amsterdam. Die alle bieten wenigstens etwas für das Geld was man beim Eintritt bezahlt. Ich fand das wirklich sehr enttäuschend. Auch hatte ich Glück überhaupt hinein kommen zu können da der Eingang abgeriegelt war. Anscheinend sind die gar nicht darauf aus Besucher zu bekommen. Hier ist dringend ein Bedarf an Veränderung. Der Höhepunkt war für mich, als die Frau zur Tür ging und mir mit ihren Schlüssel signalisierte dass es Zeit war zu gehen. Für mich war es...

My very first succedded attempt to go inside a jewish synagoge. I think and its abvious that they have many restriktions and limitations for visitors all over the world. Here in Sarajevo its open monday-friday(10am-2pm). Men must have a hat( called kappa) before they enter the temple. They have ceremonies on fridays evening but not open to visitors(non jewish).
