Rude male Indian employee from Ripleys, I was waiting for my children who still inside the ripleys while i was sitting there, my phone was dead so i couldnt called my kids to called off the night, and suddenly one of employee stared at me and ask if i was there waiting for somebody. I said yes im waiting for my children, then with rudely face expression he said i can not stay there , if you wanna wait.. wait outside! the ripleys will be closing soon. By that time it was 22:30 PM, it was my first time to ripleys and niagara falls ontario so how would i know the open and closing for this place? from what I've heard some of places close 12 and 2 am. If the riples closing before 12 at least he could give the informatiom to their customer/guest in nice and politely way, Not rude like talking to a homeless. Iam a tourist i came there for holiday and came there to spend money for this trip. But The way indian man employee from ripleys treat tourist this way makes me unhappy. And i told my children better concider another fun place to come not ripleys for what i feel disrespect.. lack of treating tourist. The indian employee shoud learn how to atrract tourist by giving satisfaction on hospitality. But the funny thing it wasnt happened when you've been served by the local canadian, they are so polite and nice to the niagara guest. Please ripleys maybe you should trained manners and hospitality to your employeed specially the indian. Niagara fallis the tourist attraction so hospitality and good manners is very important for your tourist...
Read moreTrigger warning human remains and racism and repatriation All I knew prior to this was Ripley’s books that were in my library in 2006 that I loved to read, so it was always a museum I wanted to visit.
This museum is a relic of the 19th and 20th centuries and it should have a warning before you come in, or at least clearer context on the displays. This museum has a carnival-like display which isn’t surprising given its location on the Hill. Because of the ambiguity and the shock of not knowing what you are looking at or going to see next, it was very disorienting being inside. Literally as you turn the corner walking, you are presented with tales of Orientalism and a promises of real human remains. There are numerous artifacts that are in the museum with no proper citation of how they got there or if it is on loan, or any attempts of repatriation. This museum simply does not try to go beyond shock value because it shoved so many things together, it is impossible to give the objects the respect they deserve.
The actually fun part of the museum was at the end with the visual illusions, but it was hard to shake off what stuff me and my partner saw earlier. There are so many foreign horrors presented included medieval, but shockingly (not) no mention of slavery from the Americas in the last 400 years. Anything weird in the americas is shown only on the individual level, yet every other culture gets generalizations. Maybe thats a good thing considering the treatment of every other culture in the museum. I wouldn’t...
Read moreSuper pretty art pieces and some fun interactive displays and things to do and look at. I only redact one star on the basis of the questionable ethics behind some of the displays (I.e stolen or pillaged artefacts) and the racist disinformation in some of the displays surrounding ethnic groups.
I understand that this museum is supposed to be a lies-your-older-cousin-tells-you-to-entertain-you-at-Christmas-dinner sort of thing, but some of the language used towards indigenous people from around the world is constantly referring to them nebulously as “cannibal cults” or just “cannibals,” and often don’t specify any indigenous groups for the well-read to investigate more closely, to use the disinformation to inspire education. Namely, they have a display of a pair of skulls labelled a Filipino head hunter’s trophy — my closest friend is indigenous Filipino, and in his words, “none of that is real what the (censored). they don’t even have an igorot.”
I am also indigenous and while these displays display some fascinating macabre artwork, the disinformation that people will be left with is egregiously racist at worst and in poor taste at best.
There is also some language in the displays (I.e midget) that some may also find hurtful or offensive, or in poor taste.
Nonetheless, a fun little museum to walk through as long as you remember to approach everything in an attraction like this with copious grains of salt, especially in regards to ethnic groups, and be conscious of the language used and the...
