Read more“Faded glory” is how my partner described Castillo Hidalgo. A few gardeners were working hard with cobbled-together watering systems to keep the grounds kempt. But it’s a losing battle without sufficient funds. They’re not charging an admission fee. Probably because it would increase the authority’s legal liability in case of an accident. And there’s plenty of opportunity for that… There were two security guards taking entrant’s details including passport numbers. My charitable side hopes they’re taking a census as part of the business case for investment. The cynic in me suspects it’s any other jobsworth activity and I’d rather their salary was spent on litter-pickers and maintenance workers. Read moreIt was a wonderful experience to visit the Castille. Finding such a historical treasure almost secreted away in the middle of a modern city is mind-boggling. It's a great outing, but take enough water as there are a lot of stairs! One cannot enter the castle itsself, but there are many little pathways to follow to the top. As you climb higher there are many vantage points to take photo's. It is awesome to, in the end, have a 360° view of the city of Santiago.
