The massive and richly decorated Baroque fountain stands approximately in the middle of II. Castle Courtyard. It was created in 1686 by J. Kohl and the Italian stonemason F. della Torre. It is also called the Lion fountain (according to the sculptures on the column) or Leopod´fountain (according to Emperor Leopold I, under whose reign it was fbuilt). Up to 1918, a gilded Habsburg eagle was placed on the top ball. The fountain is fed with water by an ancient castle water supply system, which takes water from the Brusnice brook and from the pond below the Hvězda summer palace in Horní Liboc (some 4 kilometers western direction).
At the end of the 17th or early 18th century, an octagonal well with forged canopy was built by an unknown author in the neighborhood of Kohl's Fountain. The well is 14 meters deep, the water column is 4 meters high. It was used as a source of water until 1905. A total of about 20 old wells are known in the castle area, mostly from Romanesque or Gothic times.
Mohutná a bohatě zdobená barokní kašna stojí přibližně uprostřed II. hradního nádvoří.

Welcome to your tour of the Czech Republic. This Kohl's Fountain, located in the middle of the second courtyard of Prague Castle, is a historic sculpture that every visitor to Prague Castle sees but may not fully understand. It was first erected in 1686 during the reign of Leopold I and has stood here ever since. The fountain was one of the main water sources for the castle, with water supplied by an aqueduct built between 1550 and 1573, sourced from the Brusnice stream and the Libocký pond located below the Hvězda summer palace.
Originally called Leopold's Fountain, it was named after Emperor Leopold I, hence the golden "L" visible on the outer edges. Due to the lion sculptures on the column, it is also known as the Lion's Fountain. The name Kohl's Fountain comes from the sculptor Jeroným Kohl. The fountain is situated on three stone steps, where visitors often like to sit as there are no benches in the entire courtyard.
Facing the fountain's sculpture, you will see Heracles, cloaked in a lion's skin, representing the Greek mythological hero known for his strength, courage, and wisdom as the son of Zeus. To the right stands Mercury (Latin: Mercurius), the wing-footed messenger of the gods in Roman mythology. On the left is Neptune, the god of the sea, rivers, and horses in Roman mythology, depicted with a large fish at his feet. Behind is Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge, son of Jupiter, and husband of Venus, holding a hammer. At the top of the fountain is a sphere supported by three lions, crowned by the double-headed eagle of the Habsburg dynasty. The fountain was last...
